Present apply review Introduce students to a new topic by giving them a set of documents using a variety of formats (e.g. text, video, web link etc.) outlining the background information and context. As students work through the new material, you want to check that they can recall the prior learning necessary to understand the new. You want to ask questions at appropriate stages to check recall. You also want to give students the chance to revisit prior learning if they answer a question incorrectly before continuing with the new material.

Present apply review Focus on an historical event and find an appropriate stimulus related to it, (e.g. news item, image, poem, piece of music) and use it to start a discussion. You want students to: apply their knowledge and experience; develop their verbal reasoning within an academic context. practise agreeing and disagreeing (possibly using role play). You want to assess the students’ understanding of the topic and their communication skills from the results.

Present apply review Ensure that students understand:
specialist terminology and key words in a subject or area of usage; abbreviations, acronyms and synonyms; the meaning of ‘command words’ that may appear in exam questions. Each student must research the meaning of 4 specialist terms or key phrases for homework and share with others.

Present apply review You want to get hold of a copy of a BBC2 programme that you know was broadcast within the last year to introduce a new topic to students. You know that you will have to edit the 60 minute programme down to the 20 minutes that was relevant. You will set the students homework that requires them to watch the video outside of lesson time. You also want to check that students have actually watched the programme and understood the content.

Present apply review You want to let students know in advance whenever possible what homework will be set and when students will need to complete it. Homework instructions will be provided by topic, content, submission date and guidance on the recommended time for completion. The homework you set will be relevant only to your particular class in P block and not to other students.

Present apply review You want students to carry out research on a topic. You create a group activity and divide the students into groups (a maximum of 4 students per group). Students must: carry out research online and in the LRC; provide references to the resources used; submit an 800 word group report. Submissions can include digital files.

Present apply review At the end of each topic, you want to test the students recall of key terminology and understanding of basic concepts. If the test is going to be useful for students, you will need to include a variety of different question types, including multiple choice, true-false, short answer questions and, ideally also images for labeling. You want to provide instant feedback in response to a student’s attempt at answering each question. You also want to provide hints and tips for students who might need it.

Present apply review You want students to draw a flow diagram (or sequence chart) to shows a series of steps in the order in which they take place. This will be set as a group activity and students will present their diagram to the class.

Present apply review You want to give students as much exam practice as possible in preparation for the real thing. One way to do that would be to give students the opportunity to work independently through a selection of sample exam questions with access to model answers so that they can self-assess or even peer-assess. Your time is in short supply though, so you would need to identify the most efficient way of meeting the students’ individual needs and keep on schedule.

Present apply review You set your new students a number of tasks for homework as part of induction. They must approach the tasks in a structured way and will be rewarded on completion. You will also be able to assess the prior skills and knowledge of individual students and the whole class as a result. You want students to: watch a video and answer a few related questions carry out some research on a specific website read and understand an article from a journal complete a final quiz testing overall understanding and recall.

Present apply review You want to make sure that all your students have the best possible chance of success, so you are always trying to meet individual needs. After carrying out key assessments, you have to decide how you can help students who are struggling and who need more of your time. However, you don’t want the students who did well to get bored and feel that they are not being challenged enough. You investigate your Moodle options for both groups of students.

Present apply review You want your students to share their achievements and the skills they have learned over the preceding 3 terms with others – both now and in the future. The way students do this could involve many different formats, e.g. uploading a website, a PowerPoint presentation, an Infographic, a short film, an artefact, an essay, a poem, a demonstration of a scientific experiment or describing a sporting achievement. You also want to reward the students in some way for their contribution / participation in the success of the course that year through an endorsement of some kind that they can add to their CV.

Present apply review You give the students the chance to work collaboratively on a communal document, creating content on a topic set by you. The entire class (or sub-groups) can edit the document together, creating a class (or group) product. This document can be a ‘work-in-progress’ and can grow organically over time as students add to it (compare online resources like Wikipedia). The document will also represent a communal memory of everyone who participated in it.

Present apply review You provide an opportunity for students to submit their own work and then receive a number of submissions from other students in return which they must assess according to your specifications. The process of peer assessment and understanding the assessment form would need to be practised in advance with example submissions provided by you. Students would be given the opportunity to assess one or more of their peers' submissions, which would be anonymous. Students will be graded for their submission and for their assessment of their peers' submissions.
