Objectives 1. State the reasons for machinery maintenance 2. Describe the limits of your responsibility in regard to machinery maintenance 3. State 3 safe practices when maintaining machinery

Sources of advice you have for maintenance? 1. ____________________________ 2. ____________________________ 3. ____________________________ 4. ____________________________ 5. ____________________________ 6. ____________________________ 7. ____________________________

Sources of advice for maintenance 1. Experienced operators. 2. Machinery instruction books. 3. Suppliers. 4. Manufacturers. 5. Signs on machines. 6. Colleges 7. Trade publications. 8. Internet.

Machinery maintenance - employer responsibility 1. Provide correct training 2. Produce risk assessments 3. Keep machinery maintenance records 4. Provide a suitable workshop 5. Provide appropriate PPE 6. Maintenance is carried out according to manual

Machinery maintenance - employee responsibility Report damage faults or unsafe equipment Only carry out maintenance you have been trained on. Wear correct PPE

Maintenance you may be allowed to do Fuelling Checking oils Check coolant levels Greasing Replacing air filters Tyre pressures Cleaning equipment

Reasons for maintaining machinery 1. Legal requirement. 2. Improved health and safety 3. Longer machine life 4. Machine retains value 5. High quality of operation 6. Reduced running cost

Preparations before machinery maintenance Machines should be cleaned Your working area should be clean and free from obstacles, well ventilated and provide sufficient light Disconnect battery Start engine to warm up before changing the oil

Disassemble parts in order

Safe practices Pull on the spanner rather than push for nuts Wear eye protection at all times. Use barrier creams or appropriate rubber or latex gloves Keep loose fitting clothes and hair away from moving parts. Keep your work area tidy. Don’t lift heavy objects, maximum of 25kg unaided.

Read warning signs on machines

Use a hydraulic ramp when maintaining machinery

Minimising leakages Use funnel Ensure cap is firmly on

COSHH and machinery maintenance COSHH – Control of Substances Hazardous to Health The regulations cover all dangerous substances not just pesticides. Must assess risk of hazardous substance In order to comply with COSHH regulations a risk assessment must be written for every product used.

Dealing with stored energy 1. Exercise caution with compressed springs or other mechanical parts that are tensioned. 2. Remove spark plug leads or disconnect battery. 3. Switch off fuel supply, drain or remove tank. 4. Drain oil when cool enough to do so.

Hazardous substances in the workshop Cleaning fluids. Hydraulic oils. Lubricating oils. Coolants (containing anti-freeze). Asbestos dust and fibres (brake shoes).

Dealing with spillages 1. Cordon off area. 2. Contain the spillage with sand or absorbent granules 3. Sweep and shovel up 4. Put debris in marked containers and store under lock and key to await disposal via a licensed contractor

Correct storage of tools Shadow board, a wall mounted board with outlines of the tools visible. Hooks in these allow tools to be hung in their place. Tool boxes, for tools that need to be transported Locked cupboards, usually for more expensive or delicate tools.

Tool shadowboard

PUWER – Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations What do employers have to do for this law?

PUWER – Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations Employers responsibility under PUWER 1) Provide suitable equipment 2) Provide maintained equipment 3) Proper training instruction given 4) PPE free of charge
