1. Background The St John Eye Hospital was established for charitable works in Jerusalem in 1882; We are the only charitable provider of expert eye care in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem; In 2015 we treated 123,000 outpatients (including 40,000 children) regardless of race, religion or ability to pay; We performed over 5,000 major operations; Our services include Hospitals in East Jerusalem and Hebron, Clinics in Gaza and Anabta, and a Mobile Outreach Programme which serves remote areas of the West Bank; Our Hospitals and Clinics employ 235 staff, including 33 doctors and 84 nurses, and the cost of our charitable work amounts to £8.3 million; Our 4-year Residency Programme at the Jerusalem Hospital trains local doctors, investing in the shattered local infrastructure. There are 5 doctors undertaking this programme; Our School of Nursing trains nurses to become ophthalmic specialists; in 2015 5 nurses completed our programme; We work with Israel’s world-renowned Hadassah Medical Center to provide doctors with otherwise unattainable training in Ophthalmology. General Population There are 4.6 million Palestinians living in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza. 40% are under the age of 14 and over a third face food shortages (Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics and UNRWA). Local Health The rate of blindness in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) is ten times higher than in the West; The incidence of diabetes amongst the Palestinian community is very high, at approximately 12-15%. This is three times higher than in the West; Diabetic retinopathy affects up to 80% of all people who have had diabetes for ten years or more; 80% of all blindness is preventable; The near completion of the Separation Wall and restrictions on movement leave many with very limited access to medical care. Jerusalem Hospital In 2015, our Hospital treated over 46,500 patients including performing approximately 3,800 major operations; The Hospital is the first in the Palestinian Territories to receive the prestigious Joint Commission International accreditation, a standards award recognising the Hospital as achieving the highest standards of patient care; Many of the most complex eye-related cases are referred to the Jerusalem Hospital from medical centres, NGOs, UNRWA and Ministry of Health centres across Gaza and the West Bank. Hebron Hospital In 2015 the Hebron Hospital treated almost 11,500 patients including performing more than 330 major operations; There are 500,000 residents in Hebron and its surrounding villages; SJEHG opened its new custom-designed clinic in Hebron to the public at the end of 2015. The new clinic will be easier for patients to access and will result in more patient visits and surgery. Gaza Clinic In 2015, over 31,400 Gazans received crucial eye care in our Clinic, including 900 major operations; Out of the almost 1.4 million people living in Gaza, 1.2 million are refugees (UNRWA); 80% of the population are dependent on international assistance (UN); Gaza is one of the most densely populated regions in the world (UNDP). Anabta Clinic In 2015, our Clinic in Anabta treated over 22,000 people; Anabta is in the north of the West Bank. Many of its residents are refugees from Gaza, and it is easily accessible from Nablus, Tulkarem and Jenin; There is a particularly high prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in and around Anabta. Mobile Outreach In 2015, our Mobile Outreach Programme reached over 16,700 patients; a significant increase from last year, this is due to the fact that as of 2015 we have a second unit operating in the area; Our Mobile Outreach Programme takes essential eye care to isolated communities in the West Bank; The programme was set up in 1982 in response to the difficulties experienced by patients who were struggling to reach the Hospital in Jerusalem. Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Programme Our Diabetic Retinopathy Screening Programme (which was fully launched in 2013) has continued to screen, treat and manage diabetic retinopathy (retinal damage to the eye caused by diabetes, which can lead to blindness) among patients in the West Bank; Training, awareness-raising and capacity-building are also major elements of this programme; Other eye conditions are often revealed as a result of the screening process and these patients are also referred for treatment and management; Since the beginning of the programme we have screened over 30,000 patients of which over 10,000 have been treated for diabetic retinopathy.
