6 9/25/13 OPENER: Look at the picture. How many centimeters, millimeters, and meters is this Band-Aid wrapper?

7 You are probably also familiar with some of the metric system units
You are probably also familiar with some of the metric system units.  Match these... A  2 ______ bottle of soda. A  ________ of sugar. A  ________ stick. a.  gram b.  liter c.  meter

8 English Units Length Area
12 inches = 1 foot square inches = 1 square foot 3 feet = 1 yard 9 square feet = 1 square yard 220 yards = 1 furlong 4,840 square yards = 1 acre 8 furlongs = 1 mile acres = 1 square mile 5,280 feet = 1 mile 1 square mile = 1 section 1,760 yards = 1 mile 36 sections = 1 township Volume Capacity (Dry) 1,728 cubic in. = 1 cubic foot grains = 1 ounce 27 cubic feet = 1 cubic yard bushel = 8 dry gallons 8 dry quarts = 1 peck Mass Capacity (Liquid) 14 pounds = 1 stone 16 fluid ounces = 1 pint 100 pounds = 1 hundredweight 4 gills = 1 pint 2 pints = 1 quart 4 quarts = 1 gallon

9 Metric Prefixes Base Units Length =meter Mass = gram Volume = liter

10 SI (System of International) Units
Uses powers of 10 (10-1, 101, 102, 103,etc.) Uniform way to present and report data across the world. How is SI different than our American units? Why do scientists use this system?

11 Basic Units Meter (m) length Gram (g) mass Liter (l) volume

12 Prefixes Add to the beginning of a Basic Unit Nano (n) Micro ()
Milli (m) Centi (c) Deci (d) Deca (da) Hecto (h) Kilo (k) Example: cm = centimeter Example: mg = milligram

13 Metric System If you needed to measure length you would choose meter as your base unit Examples: -Length of a tree branch 1.5 meters -Length of a room 5 meters -Length of a ball of twine stretched out 25 meters

14 Length Measurements Millimeter = small objects, like a quarter
Centimeter = small objects, your foot or even your height Meter = larger distances, the size of a room Kilometer = much larger distances, Vancouver to Seattle

15 Metric system units are base 10, so it is easy to convert
Ex.   There are 10 millimeters in 1 centimeter          100 centimeters in 1 meter A mm is about as thick as a dime.   Notice there are about 10 dimes between the 6 and the 7 on this photo. The large number represent centimeters.

16 Don't worry about converting inches to centimeters - just measure in centimeters to start with; hence, METRIC ruler Use your metric ruler to calculate .. 1. Width of your desk  _______ cm 2. Width of your desk  ______ mm 3. Length of your index finger _____ cm 4. Length of your index finger ______mm

17 Volume measures the amount of space something takes up, usually a liquid.
SI units for volume: -Liter -Milliliter Beakers and Graduated cylinders used to measure volume

18 How to read a graduated cylinder
The smallest quantity that can be measured accurately using a measuring instrument. Indicates the degree of accuracy of measurement that can be achieved by the measuring instrument. Always estimate past the last count.

19 CC = cubic centimeter, which is the same as a ml
Used in medicine

20 Mass: the amount of matter in an object
Measured in grams and kilograms            Weight measures mass + gravity

21 How to read a balance...

23 Measuring Practice Worksheet
Practice reading measurements

24 Measuring Lab Draw data table below (Object 1) Object 2 Object 3
Volume (ml) Mass (g) Length (cm)

25 Measuring Quick Lab Station 1 – Volume
Determine the volumes (ml) of each graduated cylinder (each is a different color). Record in data table. Station 2 – Mass Measure the mass of 5 different objects in grams using the triple beam balances. Record in data table. Station 3 – Length Choose 5 objects to measure in cm or m using a ruler or a meter stick. Measure and record in data table.

26 Measuring Assessment When finished with each measuring station, come see Mrs. Russell to be assessed on your measuring skills. Only 1 student at a time. You will measure the length, mass of an object, and the volume of water.
