3 Objectives 1.Explain the legal, ethical and environmental implications of computer use. 2.Research how the internet is policed. 3.Describe the Institute of Computer Ethics 10 commandments. 4.Explain if there is a difference between legal and ethical. 5.Update F451 booklet.

4 Legal Issues The internet was at one time considered to be a lawless land. Copyright infringements, making threats and offensive material could be posted with publishers feeling safe and anonymous. Laws have been updated to include the internet, such as copyright laws, obscene publications and extensions to existing laws.

5 The Copyright Law Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988. – Gives the rights of ownership to the creator of the artistic work – It is automatically assigned once a piece of work is created by a person or company – Expires: 50 years after release for sound recordings 70 years after the creator dies for literary, dramatic, musical, artistic works, films You can sell or transfer copyright

6 The Copyright Law – Cont… You can: – Make one copy of anything you own as a back-up – Record with the right to watch later – Tivo, iPlayer etc. – Apply fair use to copy parts for: Parody, review, research, criticism copying and lending by libraries. You may not: – Copy for the intent to make profit – Make multiple copies to give away – Download where the provider has not been granted rights/paid royalties – Lend the original to you friends or give a public display without the owners permission.

7 Freedom Research the UK and US laws on making online threats. Based upon them if you went on holiday to China and threatened someone in the UK could you be charged and arrested upon return? Does the law of the country extend outside its borders when it comes to the internet?

8 Ethics Do you agree or disagree with these statements: ‘If it is not illegal them it is not immoral’ ‘You have a duty to follow all laws even those that are unjust’ ‘You can always trust people to do the right thing’

9 Computing Commandments 1. THOU SHALT NOT USE A COMPUTER TO HARM OTHER PEOPLE. 2. THOU SHALT NOT INTERFERE WITH OTHER PEOPLE'S COMPUTER WORK. 3. THOU SHALT NOT SNOOP AROUND IN OTHER PEOPLE'S COMPUTER FILES. 4. THOU SHALT NOT USE A COMPUTER TO STEAL. 5. THOU SHALT NOT USE A COMPUTER TO BEAR FALSE WITNESS. 6. THOU SHALT NOT COPY OR USE PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE FOR WHICH YOU HAVE NOT PAID. 7. THOU SHALT NOT USE OTHER PEOPLE'S COMPUTER RESOURCES WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION OR PROPER COMPENSATION. 8. THOU SHALT NOT APPROPRIATE OTHER PEOPLE'S INTELLECTUAL OUTPUT. 9. THOU SHALT THINK ABOUT THE SOCIAL CONSEQUENCES OF THE PROGRAM YOU ARE WRITING OR THE SYSTEM YOU ARE DESIGNING. 10. THOU SHALT ALWAYS USE A COMPUTER IN WAYS THAT INSURE CONSIDERATION AND RESPECT FOR YOUR FELLOW HUMANS.

10 Environmental Issues Go online and find out how much computer waste is created each year. How are governments and companies reusing old technology? Are there any predictions about how long we can sustain our society’s Computer usage?

11 Presentations!!! You will see in the computing book there are seven scenarios. You will each do one of them and give a presentation on it on Thursday’s lesson. Anyone who doesn’t do it will be fed to the Rancor!

12 Who Will Do What? If only we had a completely fair and unbiased way to decide.
