TODAY’S GOALS Get to know the new DEP (differentiated education plan) as part of the “new” AIG plan. Make connections between the DEP and what you are already doing. Give you at least two ideas or resources that will improve your practice or help you to serve our kids.

DIFFERENTIATING FOR AIG IN MIDDLE SCHOOL THE PLAN IN ACTION

AIG STUDENTS IN MIDDLE SCHOOLS ARE SERVED BY… Where? p. 14 p. 16 p. 17 p. 25-26 p. 30 What? Adapting the NC standard course of study Differentiated strategies: project based learning, seminars, tiered lessons, and more! (a more complete list on the DEP) Students who meet criteria may have the option of taking the next level course in ELA or M Parent meetings held to explain services to parents AIG facilitators

A WORD ABOUT FACILITATORS AND CLASSROOM TEACHERS… Facilitators have been placed at each of the middle schools— either full time or part time depending on enrollment. p. 30 –The facilitator can provide research on gifted education, develop and model 21 st century lesson plans, present staff development, and work with parents and the community on issues related to gifted education. p. 31 – teachers of AIG students in ELA or M should be locally endorsed or certified by the state within three years of their start as AIG teachers

NOTICE THE THEME FOR ENVIRONMENT OPTIONS? Place in cluster groups Create flexible groups Address students’ needs Acceleration provided All of this using…

PROJECT BASED LEARNING ANY QUESTIONS?

PROBLEM BASED LEARNING A framework for learning that engages students in a problem-solving process. They can gather new information and learn new concepts, apply principles to new situations, develop skills, etc. This construct can be used in any subject. English Language Arts (even Science and Social Studies) is a logical place to use this—creating, writing and defending points of view related to fiction, or content based issues. But how can this be used for math??

PROBLEM BASED INSTRUCTION IN MATH SEE ACCESSIBLE MATHEMATICS BY STEVE LEINWAND (STEVELEINWAND.COM) *ADAPT WHAT WE KNOW WORKS IN OUR READING PROGRAMS AND APPLY IT TO MATHEMATICS INSTRUCTION. CLASSROOM MANTRAS: WHY? HOW DO YOU KNOW? EXPLAIN THAT. DRAW A PICTURE.

FOR EXAMPLE: There are 310 million people in the United States. There are 13,000 McDonalds in the U.S. There is a point somewhere in the lower 48 that is farther from a Mc Donalds than any other point. WHAT STATE AND HOW FAR?? OR There are 310 million people in the United States. There are 13,000 McDonalds in the U.S. McDonalds claims that 12% of all Americans eat at McDonalds every day. VALID? INVALID? SURE? NO WAY? Make the case that this claim is valid or invalid.

HIGHER ORDER, CRITICAL AND CREATIVE THINKING Interactive Student Notebooks… (Thank you, April Williams) The purpose of the INB is to enable the student to be a creative, independent thinker and writer. INBs are used for class notes and other activities where students are asked to express their own ideas and process the info presented in Social Studies. The left hand side is for student reflection. (see examples) These could be used in any subject! Email me if you would like more resources on this.

21 ST CENTURY?? THE 21 ST CENTURY IS SO YESTERDAY “The world is moving at a tremendous rate. No one knows where. We must prepare our children, not for the world of the past, but for their world, the world of the future.” --guess who?? (lived 1859-1952)

ADVANCED LITERATURE Edgar Allan Poe Shakespeare Others?? Draw them in…

SEMINAR TEACHING Most convenient to ELA, but could be used in other subjects. Social Studies current events? Science ethics issues? Junior Great Books and William and Mary resources Ric Courtright – good basic outline for a reference

CURRICULUM COMPACTING SHARE!! WHAT DO YOU HAVE? WHAT CAN WE OFFER?

AIG NIGHT FOR PARENTS I will talk 15-20 minutes, then have them break apart into grade levels (send them to your classrooms?). I need at least one person from each team to talk to the parents about examples for the DEP and to get signatures. Be ready to tell what you do that fits in with the DEP as it is now written. Let’s pick tentative dates??
