8. John Cabot (1450-1497) JC was born in Italy, but sailed for England. King Henry VII granted him a charter & gave him a small ship and crew. He thought he could reach Asia by sailing west. He left with the intention of finding a faster, safer route to the treasures of the Orient. JC took a more northerly route than Columbus had. Thinking he was in Asia, he named the island “new found land.” Actually, he was on the land that is now Newfoundland, Canada.

9. Samuel de Champlain (1567-1637) French explorer Mapped most of northeastern North America Established the settlement of Quebec.

10. Robert LaSalle (1643-1687) French explorer Traveled from Quebec, New France (Canada) down the Mississippi River, and into the Gulf of Mexico He claimed the Mississippi River Valley for France.

11. Francisco Coronado (1510-1544) Spanish explorer First European to explore southwestern US. He claimed this area for Spain. Coronado explored the Rio Grande River. He was looking for the legendary “City of Gold”.
