1 Printmaking Studio ArtMr. Uhl

2 What is printmaking? It has the ability to make more than one of a specific image in a limited edition. The artist will use some sort of stencil or plate to print or layer a color or colors.

3 What is a linocut or a woodcut? A woodcut or linocut was the earliest form of printmaking and involves a significant amount of drawing. It first appeared in China in the 9 th century, then in Europe around 1400. Albrecht Durer became one of the most famous lino cut artists. His work is very religious oriented, why? It is a relief form of printmaking, meaning ink is applied to the surface and only the raised areas will print. A simple example of relief printing is a rubber stamp pressed into a stamp pad and pressed onto a piece of paper.

18 Project Assignment Create a linocut that re-tells a general fairy tale or Grimm’s Fairy Tale story. You may also work with Aesops fables. Design an image appropriate for a print (it needs to be based upon the story). Stay away from cutesy cartoons. You will make use of contour line, hatching, cross- hatching, and contour hatching to create depth and shadow. Think about shape, line, and space (pos/neg) when designing your image. You will be printing a series of 4 images, and handing in your 3 best prints.
