EcoINFORMA Initiative EcoINFORMA: Ecoinformatics-based Open Resources and Machine Accessibility Initiative recommended by PCAST in 2011 report Sustaining Environmental Capital Interagency coordination provided by BioEco

Core Science Systems 3 EcoINFORMA Goals Expand the availability and interoperability of data & information on: – Biodiversity – Ecosystems – Ecosystem Services Mobilize Federal and non-Federal data for use by researchers, the public, and government decision-makers.

Core Science Systems 4 EcoINFORMA Framework

Components of EcoINFORMA

EcoINFORMA’s Web Portal in Data.gov Entry point for access to: – EcoINFORMA Resource Hubs – Other biodiversity, ecosystem, ecosystem services, and related geophysical data – EcoINFORMA Map Viewer

EcoINFORMA Map Viewer Tool for conducting mashups and integration of geospatial layers from Resource Hubs and other data sources

Biodiversity Resource Hub BISON (Biodiversity Information Serving Our Nation) Repository for access, visualization and download of biological occurrences of species found in the United States Currently 200M+ records; data from multiple sources Developed by USGS

Ecosystem Services Resource Hub EnviroAtlas Decision support tool for viewing, analyzing and downloading geospatial data related to ecosystem services 160+ national data layers; national data summarized by 12-digit HUCs Developed by EPA and collaborators

Land Cover Dynamics Resource Hub MRLC (Multi-Resolution Land Characteristics Consortium) Provides land cover data and information for the years 1992, 2001, 2006 and 2011, including a data evaluation tool Developed by consortium of federal agencies; maintained by USGS

Core Science Systems BISON Freshwater Fish Datasets USGS NAWQA BioData – 324,007 USGS MARIS - 1,022,397 Other Non USGS sets in BISON - 2,523,292 NAWQA Biodata MARIS Freshwater Fish in BISON (3,869,696) National data investments, each with proven value on their own, now dramatically more valuable together. Now arriving… BIRDS! BISON recently finished a 2 year project to add 52,417,917 digitized bird records from 6 programs at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center to bring the total bird records in BISON to 190,293,027 and create the largest and most comprehensive bird occurrence data set for any country in the world. EcoINFORMA Biodiversity The USGS Story

Core Science Systems 12 EcoINFORMA EcoINFORMA released to the public 12/10/15 by Secretary Jewell. – ECOSYSTEMS.DATA.GOV – including catalog – EcoINFORMA universal geospatial viewer on the FGDC Geoplatform – Three initial hubs (EPA-EnviroAtlas, USGS-BISON, MRLC) – Provided tools and data for Climate Tools Initiative and Ecosystem Resilience Map loop shows predicted distribution of Taenionema atlanticum (Winter Stonefly) currently and in 2039, 2069, and 2099. A2 climate scenario. These are an important food for trout. NEXT UP! – Add high value services for better tools and decision making. – Scale up participation (new agencies, new hubs – e.g. USDA Agricultural Commons) – New layers and tools illustrating the integrated backyard to national-scale decision-making. Ecosystem Services Layers based on Biodiversity and Invasives Current and forecast future distribution under climate change for 38,000+ species
