Key Ideas  Fire spreads quickly  In less than 30 seconds, a small fire can become a large blaze  The heat from a fire is more dangerous than the flames  The temperature of a room on fire can be three times as hot as boiling water  Fire uses up air and produces poisonous gases  Smoke and poisonous gases are the major causes of death

Fire Facts  It can take less than 30 seconds for a small flame to turn into a major fire  If you wake up to a fire, there is very little time to get out  While fire creates light, smoke creates darkness – it is very easy to become lost in your own home  Fire uses up air – breathing smoke and gases can make you dizzy, sleepy or stop breathing

4. Fire Facts  Room temperatures in a fire can reach 316° C  Breathing hot air will damage lungs  The heat from fire can melt clothes to the skin  Heat rises, so the area closer to the floor is cooler and safer when attempting an escape
