3 3 Growing The Talent Pipeline Career pathways: self-reflection exercise Have you ever started in one direction, and before long, years had flown by, and the trajectory of your life simply changed course? What paths have you taken that got you where you are today? You came to a fork in the road and you took one path? Have you ever thought of where you would be if you had taken another? Think of someone else who changed directions, purposefully or because of particular circumstances. (Son, daughter, husband, wife, friend…your client/customer).

14 14 Growing The Talent Pipeline Career Pathways in WIOA ▪ Align with the skills needed by industries in the state or regional economy; ▪ Prepare individuals to succeed in a range of education options, including apprenticeships; ▪ Include counseling to support an individual in achieving the individual’s education and career goals; ▪ Include, as appropriate, concurrent education and training opportunities for a specific occupation or occupational cluster; ▪ Organize education, training, and support services to meet individual needs and accelerate the educational and career advancement; ▪ Enable individuals to attain a high school diploma or equivalent, and at least one recognized postsecondary credential; ▪ Help individuals enter or advance within an occupation or occupational cluster.

15 Traditional Pathway? … only 18%!! 15 Of 100 Colorado 9 th graders… 77 graduated on-time from high school Of these graduates, 44 enrolled in college that fall – 34 of these students enrolled at an in-state college 35 students returned for their 2 nd year of college 23 students completed a postsecondary credential within 150% of standard program completion time 18 of these graduates then entered into employment in Colorado within the year following graduation Jobs that typically require an undergraduate credential for entry From where are businesses sourcing their talent? Advancing to the workforce is not a linear process; there is a need for a system that supports everyone. Some students complete high school in 5 or 6 years Some students complete their GED Some students directly enter the workforce Some pursue an apprenticeship Some students enroll at a private occupational school Some enter military service Some return to postsecondary program at another time.

16 A Career Pathway System will meet the needs of key industries and provide opportunities for workers. The unemployment rate decreased two- tenths of a percentage point in February 2016 to 3.0 percent. A fast-growing economy means that a well- educated and well-trained talent pool must be available and prepared to meet the needs of Colorado companies now and in the future
