2 Risk Factors for Heart Disease ♥Tobacco smoke ♥High blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes ♥Physical inactivity ♥Obesity or being overweight ♥Stress may affect any of these risk factors and can increase your risk for heart disease.

3 Effects of Stress on the Heart. ♥Increased heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen demand on the body. ♥Release of stress hormones. ♥Lower threshold for abnormal heart rhythms. ♥Spasm of coronary (heart) blood vessels, leading to ischemia (inadequate blood flow to the heart).

4 Did You Know? ♥The most commonly reported “trigger” for a heart attack is an emotionally upsetting event, particularly one involving anger. ♥Women seem to be particularly susceptible to developing heart problems in the face of emotional stress. ♥After a heart attack, people with higher levels of stress and anxiety tend to have more trouble recovering.

5 Preventing Heart Disease ♥Don't smoke or use tobacco products. ♥Eat a well-balanced, low-fat diet. ♥Exercise regularly by getting at least 2.5 hours of moderate aerobic physical activity per week. ♥Try stress management techniques such as yoga, tai chi, meditation, or any activity you find relaxing and enjoyable. ♥Make sure your diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol are under control. ♥Lose 5-10% of your weight if you are overweight.
