2 Question What are some of the major animal species of the Nile River? Answer Some animals are the crocodile, Wildebeest, wild dog, buffalo, gazelle, soft- shelled turtles, lizards, 15 different kinds of venomous snakes, the hippopotamus, and lastly more than 30 species of birds.

3 The Reptiles The Nile crocodile is the closest living relative to birds. It weighs up to 1,650 lbs. Their lifespan is anywhere from 75 to 100 years old! The soft-shelled turtle is originally from China. They are called “soft shelled” because their dorsal section lacks scales, though the spiny soft-shelled turtle does have some scale-like projections, hence its name. Some venomous snakes in the Nile include the Black Mamba, Saw-scaled Viper, and the Majestic Egyptian Cobra which all can grow to 12 feet long!

4 The Birds More than a million birds that migrate from Europe to Africa stop and rest at the beautiful Nile delta. They also feed and breed with other species of birds too. Some of the birds include the stork, crane, eagle, great white pelican, darter, grey heron and much more. They have tours too to see the animal in his/her native habitat. The birds relax in lakes, lagoons and even trees. At different times of the year, birds not typically found in the forest have been observed. For example, the sea swallows will fly upstream to the Atlantic ocean.

5 Mammals Not too many mammals call the banks of the Nile home. Mostly, the hippopotamus, and otters live there on a yearly basis. It is however, a stopping over point for many migratory animals as they make their way across Africa. The hippopotamus’s teeth could grow to be as long as 20 inches and their diet is all different kind of grasses. Otters on the other hand eat fish, crayfish, crabs, and frogs. An otters’ den is called a holt. This mammal must eat 15% of their body weight a day.
