2 The United States of America is a federal (or presidential) republic.So, the President is the head of state there. The President is elected directly by the people and he is not a member of the American parliament, Congress. The President and his Administration represents the executive branch of the federal government. The Administration includes the Secretaries who are heads of the executive departments. Each department is responsible for a specific area. The President appoints the Secretaries but the Senate must approve his appointments.

3 The White House is the beautiful home of every President of the United States, except the first president, George Washington. This is the oldest public building in Washington, D.C., and his most famous address in the United States- 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The White House is the place where the President of The USA lives and works. It contains 132 rooms.

4 The Capitol is in the centre of Washington D.C.. It is the tallest building in the city and the most famous in the USA, because this is where laws are made. It was made of stone and marble and contains 540 rooms. It is situated on Capitol Hill. Capitol Hill is the highest place in the city. There is a law that forbids to build houses higher than the Capitol. The Capitol is the seat of Congress.

5 Hillary Clinton is the Head of the Government (Congress). Congress consists of two Chambers: the Senate and the House of Representatives. Congress is the legislative branch of the federal government. There are 100 senators in the Senate, two for each state. The House of Representatives has 435 members, the number of Representatives from each state depends on its population. Congress makes all laws and each house of Congress can introduce a new project. Each can vote against the project passed by the other. If both houses agree the project becomes law. The legislative and the executive branches of government are involved in the system of checks and balances.

6 Washington D.C. Washington D.C. is the capital of the USA. The city is on the left bank of the Potomac River. The city was named after the first President George Washington. The population of the city is nearly three million people. There are many beautiful parks and gardens in Washington. There are many libraries, museums, art galleries in the city.

7 Jefferson Memorial. This is the Jefferson Memorial built in honor of Thomas Jefferson. He was the third president of the United States. The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson. Inside is a 19-foot statue of Thomas Jefferson standing on a 6-foot pedestal. His writings are inscribed on the walls.

8 Washington Monument The Washington Monument is one of the city’s most impressive sights. It is situated in Potomac Park. It was erected to the memory of the first President of the USA in 1888. It is called “The Pencil”, because it is one of the tallest stone construction in the world. This monument is over 555 feet high.

9 New York is the city of contrasts and the financial and business centre of the USA and of the whole world. It has over 9 million residents. The Empire State Building is the most famous building in the world. It is 1,454 feet high. There is an observatory on the 102 nd floor (1,250 feet up) and world’s greatest TV tower.

10 The Statue of Liberty The Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty was built in New York Harbor in 1886. It was a gift from the people of France. It is America’s symbol of freedom.

11 The Sears Tower is the tallest building in the world. It is located in Chicago. It is 443 metres high and it has 110 floors.
