ACT Do Now Grab the passage Do what you do best…figure out what’s going on in the experiment and how to answer the questions. 25 min

Do Now Share the main idea you came up with for homework last night with your partner. When you finish, share any vocabulary you came up with that confused you. Try to figure out what the words meant together. Write the main ideas and vocabulary in your notebooks 5 min

What is today all about? Watch this video and see if you can figure it out. http://www.unnaturalcauses.org/video_clips_detail.php?res_id=214 Watch “Everyday Racism” Let’s discuss what you think. (5 min)

Objectives Analyze risk factors influencing The Race and Health Initiative’s six priority areas. – Deduce the most common causes of morbidity and mortality amongst minority groups in the U.S. – Explain the causes and effects of each priority area.

Words We’ll Need to Know What would you consider U.S. Minority Groups? Unsure? Turn to page 271 and look at figure 10.2. U.S. Minority Groups: 33% of U.S. Population including American Indians/Alaska Natives, Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders, Black Americans, Hispanic Americans (1 min)

Other Words to Know Infant mortality: The number of infant deaths per 1000 live births. Do we get it? Why might infant mortality be higher in U.S. Minority Groups? (1 min)

Let’s attack this like epidemiologists! Look at Table 10.1 (p. 272) Use the strategies you’ve learned for Step 5 (Trends) and Step 6 (Conclusions) to: – Write/mark all the trends that you and your partner can find. – Write 2-3 conclusions based on the data. – Which groups experienced the highest and lowest amounts of death for each disease? (7 min)

LEADING causes of morbidity & mortality amongst minority groups. (According to The Secretary’s Task Force Report on Black and Minority Health) Infant Mortality Cancer Cardiovascular Disease/stroke Diabetes Homicide & Accidents Chemical Dependency (1 min)

Think like an epidemiologist…. You have data, you have a hypothesis about the leading causes of death among minority populations, what’s next? Silently read page 285-286 “Race & Health Initiative”. (3 min) NB: Now that you you’ve read about the initiative, what did epidemiologists do? (2 min) (5 min)

Race & Health Initiative’s 6 Priority Areas Infant mortality Cancer screening and management Cardiovascular disease Diabetes HIV/AIDS Adult & child immunization (2 min)

Copy into your notebooks Causes for Creating the Priority Area Priority Area In Minority Health Infer Effects of Implementing Priority Area A) Infant Mortality (p. 286) B) Cancer Screening and Management (p. 286-288) Screening is important because 1/3 of people don’t know they have hypertension, so this is prevention. C) Cardiovascular Disease (p. 290) If people are screened early, they can get treatment earlier & change their lifestyles, which will reduce the # of ppl with CD. D) Diabetes (p. 292) E) HIV/AIDS (p. 293-295) F) Child & Adult Immunizations (p. 295-297)

Do we get it? Let’s say we were talking about Sickle Cell Anemia as a PRIORITY AREA in Minority Health (an area on which the government is focusing) Which of the below are not suitable causes? Why? A.Sickle Cell Anemia kills 1/500 African Americans. B.Sickle Cell Anemia kills 1/500 African Americans, which means it is a major cause of death for a minority population. C.Sickle Cell Anemia is not preventable because it is caused by a mutation in the genes. D.Sickle Cell Anemia symptoms like low immunity can be treated with antibiotics, which means that there are ways to reduce its effects, and research is worth it.

Why are these the 6 priority areas and what are their effects??? Read your assigned section silently & fill in the chart for YOUR area. 1.Presenter 2.Timekeeper (12 min) 3.Leader 4.Note-taker (Google Doc) (12 min)

Let’s See What We Found Causes for Creating the Priority Area Priority Area In Minority Health Infer Effects of Implementing Priority Area A) Infant Mortality B) Cancer Screening and Management C) Cardiovascular Disease D) Diabetes E) HIV/AIDS F) Child & Adult Immunizations

Quick Self Check Q1 Student Objectives Self-Check Rank yourself for Obj. 2

Extension Based on what you know now, which of the 6 priority areas would YOU focus on if YOU were an epidemiologist? Why?

Homework Complete the worksheet about race and health.
