Phase Two

Phoneme – a sound in a word Grapheme – a letter or sequence of letters that represent a phoneme.

Purpose To teach at least 19 letters To move children on from oral blending and segmentation to blending and segmenting with letters. To read some VC and CVC words and spell them either using magnetic letters or writing them. To start to read simple two-syllable words and simple captions. To learn some tricky words – e.g.. the, to, no, go.

One set of letters is taught each week. Set 1 –s a t p Set 2 – i n m d At least 40 simple words can be made with these letters.

Children are taught how to recognise and pronounce phonemes, then sound out simple words and blend phonemes to read the words. Initially this will be oral.

Blending using sound buttons a t.. pan...

Segmentation using phoneme frames t a

Phase Three Teach another 25 graphemes, most comprising two letters, so the children can represent each of about 42 phonemes by a grapheme.

Mathematics Numbers Shape, Space and Measures

Numbers Early Learning Goal Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single- digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

Shape, Space and Measure Early Learning Goal Children use everyday language to talk about size, weight, capacity, position, distance, time and money to compare quantities and objects and to solve problems. They recognise, create and describe patterns. They explore characteristics of everyday objects and shapes and use mathematical language to describe them.
