 GSM supports data access over CSD.  GSM is digitized but not packetized.  GPRS is also known as 2.5G.  GPRS is evolution of GSM.  SMS enables sending and receiving text messages. 3

Neil Papworth sent first text to Vodafone GSM on December 1992. SMS was reintroduced in 1999. Today SMS is most popular data bearer service within GSM. SMS uses free capacity of channel. Up to 160 characters in length. Supports ASCII and UNICODE. 4

o 2 types of SMS: o SM MT (Short Message Mobile Terminated) o SM MO (Short Message Mobile Originated) o SM MT is an incoming message. o (SC->HLR->GMSC->MS) o SM MO is an outgoing message. o (MS->VLR->IWMSC->SC) o SME works as a SMS Gateway. 7

 Message is sent from SC to MS.  SMS can be sent everywhere in the world. 8

 Message is sent to SC from MS.  SC is a SCP within the SS7 cloud.  MO message works in two asynchronous phases.  Message delivery will be fail for invalid MSISDN. 9

 SMS is a very popular bearer in all messaging domains.  Functions as an input-output media for information exchange for a mobile application.  Services runs through SME or ESME. 10

 Information on demand: 1. Static Does not change frequently 2. Dynamic Changes in days 3. Real-time Changes continually 12

VAS Examples : I. News/Stock Quotes Service II. Session-based Chat Application III. Email through SMS IV. Health Care Services V. Micro-payment Services Alert Services : I. Time-based II. Watermark-based 13

There are two ways the SMS bearer can be accessed: 1. Use a mobile phone as a GSM modem and connect it to the computer. 2. Use the SMSC of an operator through SMPP or similar interface. 14

 Short Message Peer-to-Peer Protocol  SMPP v3.4 supports following DCN (Digital Cellular Network) technologies: A. GSM B. IS-95 (CDMA) C. CDMA 1x / CDMA 2000 D. ANSI-136 (TDMA) E. IDEN 16

 About SMPP  SMPP (Short Message Peer to Peer Protocol) is a telecommunications protocol which lets applications send/receive SMS through interaction with an SMSC (Short Message Service Centre).  Whilst there are numerous other protocols which have the same intent, SMPP has the greatest market share and is widely regarded as an industry de-facto standard.  Using SMPP  Similar to our SMS API, SMPP Interface facilitates programmatic interaction with our messaging platform. However, it is not as 'everyday' as HTTP/SMTP and requires the technical capacity to support it.  Cost of SMPP  Unlike other submission methods, the use of our SMPP Interface requires a monthly volume commitment or a service charge that is in addition to the cost of messaging. 18
