1 2011 MEAP Results Board of Education Presentation | 07 May 2012 Romeo Community Schools | Office of Curriculum and Instruction

2 Background Each fall, public school students in grades 3-9 are required to take the MEAP test. Students are tested in Reading, Mathematics, Writing, Science and Social Studies. 2

3 What is a cut score?  A “cut score” is the lowest score a student can achieve on a test to be considered “proficient.”  A cut score on a test is the score that separates test takers into various categories, such as advanced proficient, proficient, partially proficient and not proficient. 3

4 New cut scores The State Board of Education adopted new, higher cut scores in Reading, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies in 2011.  Previously, Michigan’s cut scores were based on whether students showed a basic understanding of what was taught.  The new cut scores represent a significantly higher standard for student achievement and are intended to ensure that all students are on track to be prepared for college and careers. 4
