Therefore you may need to manually update other text boxes such as the divider slides etc Data not in repository at submission Option to use generalist repositories Dryad or figshare, if no subject specific repository available Peer reviewers asked whether data is in appropriate repository

9 Updating footer To update the footer: Click into the text box on the slide master page and update the information Checking updates The text updates will not flow through to all the slide layouts as some have been placed manually. Therefore you may need to manually update other text boxes such as the divider slides etc Repositories available in submission system http://www.nature.com/sdata/data-policies/repositories

Therefore you may need to manually update other text boxes such as the divider slides etc Oak Ridge National Laboratory Distributed Active Archive Center http://dx.doi.org/10.3334/ORNLDAAC/1292 http://dx.doi.org/10.3334/ORNLDAAC/1292</ext-link 2015 Law B. 12 11 Updating footer To update the footer: Click into the text box on the slide master page and update the information Checking updates The text updates will not flow through to all the slide layouts as some have been placed manually. Therefore you may need to manually update other text boxes such as the divider slides etc Oak Ridge National Laboratory Distributed Active Archive Center http://dx.doi.org/10.3334/ORNLDAAC/1292 http://dx.doi.org/10.3334/ORNLDAAC/1292</ext-link 2015 Law B. E. Berner L. T. Sci Data Data citation for machines JATS 1.0 Data citations list marked up as data citations “dummy” value designed to, in the future, support a tool to generate links to datasets in approved repositories from dataset IDs

12 Updating footer To update the footer: Click into the text box on the slide master page and update the information Checking updates The text updates will not flow through to all the slide layouts as some have been placed manually. Therefore you may need to manually update other text boxes such as the divider slides etc Importance – Data citations of equal standing to references Evidence – Editorial process and rigour ensures data being described at Sci Data are consistently cited Unique and persistent – Sci Data only permits citations to approved repositories Interoperable and flexible – have used the same data citation process and style across all scientific disciplines Specific and verifiable – Sci Data asks authors of dynamic datasets to archive a copy of their data as it was at time of peer review, and data citations are created to both the static peer reviewed dataset and the dynamic dataset XML mark-up that is reasonably consistent with other JATS adopters JATS allows some variation between publishers (e.g. mixing data citations with standard references, or keeping them separate) Benefits of current approach

13 Updating footer To update the footer: Click into the text box on the slide master page and update the information Checking updates The text updates will not flow through to all the slide layouts as some have been placed manually. Therefore you may need to manually update other text boxes such as the divider slides etc Data Citation at Sci Data – challenges More time required editorially – ensure robustness of data citations from many repositories and disciplines Authors often place data citations in main reference section or do not include them Data citation metadata – Authors, Title & “publisher/repository” are used in different ways by different resources E.g. Repository provides no title or authors/creators for dataset, but authors “invent” the info when citing Inconsistent repository names authors vs. metadata Dealing with articles with long lists of accession numbers Longer time required to define correct XML mark-up Current JATS implementation (1.1d3) caters for versioning of datasets, where discrete versions are published, but not for datasets that are continuously updated

14 Updating footer To update the footer: Click into the text box on the slide master page and update the information Checking updates The text updates will not flow through to all the slide layouts as some have been placed manually. Therefore you may need to manually update other text boxes such as the divider slides etc Wider context and examples

15 Updating footer To update the footer: Click into the text box on the slide master page and update the information Checking updates The text updates will not flow through to all the slide layouts as some have been placed manually. Therefore you may need to manually update other text boxes such as the divider slides etc http://www.nature.com/nsmb/journal/v22/n11/abs/nsmb.3112.html#accessions Nature research journal accession codes

16 Updating footer To update the footer: Click into the text box on the slide master page and update the information Checking updates The text updates will not flow through to all the slide layouts as some have been placed manually. Therefore you may need to manually update other text boxes such as the divider slides etc Data citation at Palgrave Communications JATS 1.0 Data citations in reference list, tagged as ‘other’

17 Updating footer To update the footer: Click into the text box on the slide master page and update the information Checking updates The text updates will not flow through to all the slide layouts as some have been placed manually. Therefore you may need to manually update other text boxes such as the divider slides etc Example from SpringerLink (Mycological Progress) Mention in the references… DOI for Dryad (linked) and accession number for GenBank (not linked)

18 Updating footer To update the footer: Click into the text box on the slide master page and update the information Checking updates The text updates will not flow through to all the slide layouts as some have been placed manually. Therefore you may need to manually update other text boxes such as the divider slides etc Example from GigaScience (BioMed Central)

19 Updating footer To update the footer: Click into the text box on the slide master page and update the information Checking updates The text updates will not flow through to all the slide layouts as some have been placed manually. Therefore you may need to manually update other text boxes such as the divider slides etc Editorial policy development – more widely permit/encourage/require data citation Can we combine best of all approaches Not letting “best” be the enemy of “good” Data PIDs captured in manuscript tracking system to more efficiently create data citations Adopt JATS 1.1d3 to use improved mark-up; or Implement Data Citations in other DTDs Need scalable, standardised distinction between data generated, analysed and referenced datasets Solution to problem of very long lists of accession codes Define standards for linking to dynamic datasets Cross-publisher collaboration – it leads to better mark-up! Future directions
