11 The Land and Atmospheres Near- Real Time Capability for EOS Overview and Status Kevin Murphy, ESDIS (kevin.j.murphy@nasa.gov) LANCE User Working Group Meeting November 16, 2010

22 Overview  LANCE generates and distributes products from 5 instruments:  AIRS and MLS (Aqua)  MODIS (Aqua and Terra)  OMI (Aura)  AMSR-E (Aqua)  LANCE Objectives:  Leverage science processing expertise to create high quality NRT products  To provide a variety of Aqua, Terra, and Aura data to a wide applications community within 3 hours of observation (The standard, science-quality products are typically available with a latency of 20-48 hours)  To provide data products with high reliability using redundant systems  To provide an umbrella environment with uniform high level requirements to foster coordination and cooperation between the individual elements

11 LANCE Progress  In December 2009 the first LANCE workshop was held at the UMD and was attended by a wide range of potential users, NASA HQ and ESDIS staff, and representatives of the elements  This workshop led to a number of action items all of which have been completed except for the redundancy for the LANCE-MODIS and –OMI systems (January 2011)  ESDIS maintains a LANCE status list with associated scheduled/actual completion dates for internal tracking and reporting to NASA HQ  The major items that remain open are the integration of the Rapid Response system and a WMS/WCS into LANCE- MODIS  Details will be given in the element presentations that will include a number of activities added since the workshop

12 Key Accomplishments in the last Year  Started LANCE-AMSR-E production at the AMSR-E SIPS (September)  Added Post-Process capabilities to LANCE-MODIS (e.g. subsetting, formats) (July)  Added new products to the LANCE-MODIS, -OMI and -AMSR-E (May-Oct)  Initiated the integration of the Rapid Response System, the FIRMS, and a WMS/WCS into LANCE-MODIS (completion December 2010 – March 2011)  Added Uniform User Registration and Metrics generation for all elements – OMI will be providing latency metrics to EMS shortly  Added the Uniform LANCE Web Site  Presented 7 oral and poster papers on LANCE and the elements (OMI, AIRS, and MODIS) at the GEO, IGARSS, and A-Train meetings. In addition, a near-real time session will be chaired at the Fall AGU meeting.  Designed changes to the EDOS that will reduce the LANCE product latency by approximately 15 minutes (implementation CY1 2011)

13 Back Up Material List of LANCE Action Items and Status

14

Accomplishments - System Upgrades ActionStatusRemarks Enable system redundancy for all LANCE elements Completed for GES DISC (June, 2010) and AMSR-E SIPS (October, 2010) MODAPS planned for January, 2011 and OMI SIPS for February, 2011 Implement EOSDIS User Registration on all LANCE Elements Completed – July, 2010 Incorporate AMSR-E NRT products into LANCE Completed – April, 2010 (in MODAPS) Transitioned AMSR-E NRT products to AMSR-E SIPS in October, 2010. Incorporate MODIS Rapid Response into LANCE. Work In ProgressPlanned for completion in January, 2011

Accomplishments - Product Upgrades/Additions ActionStatusRemarks Develop algorithm succession plan (ie Collection 5 vs Collection 6 upgrade) and way to notify users. Completed – April, 2010C6 Algorithms will be operational in March, 2011. Add MODIS Land Surface Temperature product. Completed – July, 2010 Investigate adding geographic and parameter subsetting. Also, other data formats like GeoTIFF, NetCDF, KML, etc…. Completed – March, 2010Not applicable to OMI and AMSR-E Add ancillary data in AIRS L2 NRT processing. Completed – March, 2010 Incorporate IMAPP software to extract AIRS L1B channels in BUFR format. Completed – April, 2010 Provide solution for users to use a script to access LANCE data that is compatible with URS. Completed – July, 2010

Accomplishments - Outreach ActionStatusRemarks Update element web pages with product quality information, FAQs, users guide, etc….. Completed – October, 2010http://lance.nasa.govhttp://lance.nasa.gov was created which standardizes location and content for all LANCE elements Develop OMI website.Completed – June, 2010Content integrated into central LANCE site Showcase LANCE users on website. Completed – March, 2010eMODIS and FEWS NET featured on the website. Submit article on LANCE and the December workshop to the Earth Observer Completed - March 2010 Enhance LANCE website with FAQs, links and provide a common design guide for LANCE elements. Completed – October, 2010 Create a LANCE outreach kit.Completed – July, 2010

Accomplishments - Miscellaneous ActionStatusRemarks Create a governance model for LANCE. Completed – June, 2010Preliminary completed in June. Analyze data latencies for each instrument and identify ways to improve. Completed – August, 2010EDOS improvements are being implemented. Expected to complete by early 2011. (More during afternoon session) Examine approach for reporting LANCE metrics. Completed – October, 2010All elements send metrics to EMS. System latencies are reported in the ESDIS weekly and on the LANCE website. Establish routine teleconferences with MODIS users. DeferredUsers indicated that they would only like telecons when there are major changes to the system or high priority news to report. Provide a schematic flow chart of how MODIS data is delivered to LANCE. Completed -
