SAVE-IT SAfety VEhicles using adaptive Interface Technology Phase 1 Research Program Quarterly Program Review Task 3: Performance Task Leader: Paul Green

SAVE-IT Task 3: Performance u Objective: Determine measures performance measures that are diagnostic of distraction u Staffing: 3A: Green (0.8), grad (4) 3B: Green (1.39), Mayer, Zylstra=grad (7.65), undergrad (6.65) u Deliverables 3A: Literature Review (fall 03) 3B: Technical report (October 03)

SAVE-IT u Schedule u Experiment –May-July: Prepare test vehicle, plan route –August: Collect pilot and test data –August: Reduce data –September: Write report u Literature review –May-November: Assemble literature & produce report u Note: Because the start was shifted from Sept 02 to Feb 03, staff were not available until May 03. To complete phase 1 on time, the order of the lit reviews (which we know but need to summarize for others) and the experiments was reversed. The on- road experiment had to be finished during good summer weather & experiment 2b had to be completed before the start of 6b in fall of 03. These changes will have no impact on output quality or cost. Task 3: Performance

SAVE-IT Task 3a Performance Literature Review u Issues: 1. Based on the literature, which measures of driving performance (longitudinal control, lateral control, headway, etc.) are possibly affected by driving workload, how, and by how much? 2. What are typical values (mean, s.d., distribution type, etc.) for those measures?

SAVE-IT u Approach: u Look at previous summaries (e.g., Green, 1994) u Search UMTRI library and personal files u Develop scheme to select articles & prioritize; Summarize in table u Include stats for each measure by study (mean, s.d., etc.) & condition u In early stages Task 3a Performance Literature Review

SAVE-IT Task 3b: Identify Diagnostic Measures u Activities: u IRB approved u Prepared instrumented vehicle (lane tracker, headway sensor, u speed sensor, acquired & installed eye fixation system) u Route selected on public roads (mixed 2 lane & expressway) u Developed instructions & forms u Developed in-vehicle tasks u Conducted pilot test u Start main experiment in about 1 week (16 test subjects; 8 35-55, 8 65-75)

SAVE-IT Task 3b: Identify Diagnostic Measures u 3-Visual Manual Tasks u primary distraction u needed tasks that could be quickly prototyped meet schedule, budget u link to other UMTRI data & studies u only a few tasks to stay within time limit for 1 session & obtain u sufficient replications of each task in each condition u Radio tuning - in AAM guidelines as benchmark u Phone dialing - commonly used benchmark u Destination entry - relevant to SAE J2364, J2365

SAVE-IT Task 3b: Identify Diagnostic Measures

SAVE-IT Task 3b: Identify Diagnostic Measures Radio Interface (Tuning)

SAVE-IT Task 3b: Identify Diagnostic Measures Phone dialing

SAVE-IT Task 3b: Identify Diagnostic Measures Navigation-destination entry

SAVE-IT Task 3b: Identify Diagnostic Measures

SAVE-IT Task 3b: Identify Diagnostic Measures

SAVE-IT Task 3b: Identify Diagnostic Measures Show clips u tuner/dialing u destination, incorrrect u on road
