What do you ALREADY know…? In groups, discuss what you ALREADY KNOW about the Church’s teaching on the Eucharist. How does this belief DIFFER from that of other Christian denominations? WHY do you think there’s a DIFFERENCE?

1. Youtube Article… Read the “Youtube Desecration” article. Answer the questions on loose leaf paper. Share in groups…

1.What do you think of these videos? Are they… a.Appropriate or offensive/sacrilegious? b.An expression of free speech or a violation of religious freedom? c.A fitting response to the Church’s failings or a hate crime towards Christians? d.Something else…? 2.Should youtube have allowed the videos to remain on the site as long as they did, or should they have pulled them down sooner? 3.What is the role of a Christian in matters such as this? What should one do? Something? Nothing?

Take the Other Side… Consider what you just wrote… Now take up the other side and write a brief argument supporting it.

Debate Grading Clear Argument (5) – Takes a position & defends it. Argument Supported with Accurate Facts (5) – Uses details from article, videos, etc. Clear & Respectful Response(s) (5) – Actually answers other(s) with clear counterpoints. Critical Thinking Evident (5) – Does not simply repeat article, others, etc. – Had own ideas and has made connections

2. Eucharistic Miracles… Read the “Eucharistic Miracles” stories. On the same piece of paper, briefly recap each story. Each recap should be 3 – 5 sentences.

3. Scripture… Read the following Scripture passages and, after each one, identify whether you think Jesus is speaking either LITERALLY or ALLEGORICALLY and WHY you think that… – John 4: 31 – 34 – Matthew 16: 5 – 12 – John 6: 51 - 66

WDCDT?! #8: The Real Presence in the Eucharist

Jesus Speaks SYMBOLICALLY… John 4:31 – 34 – Disciples wonder about FOOD… – “My FOOD is to do the will of the One who sent me…” Matthew 16:5 – 12 – Disciples worried about BREAD… – “How do you not comprehend that I was not speaking to you about BREAD?”

Notice the PATTERN… Jesus says something about FOOD The disciples WONDER, QUESTION, ETC. Jesus EXPLAINS his MEANING The disciples continue to FOLLOW Jesus

John 6 “The Bread of Life Discourse” What’s Jesus saying?! How do you know…?

Jesus Speaks LITERALLY… John 6:51 – Jesus talks about FOOD – Jesus’ FLESH is the BREAD we must EAT to LIVE John 6:52 – Disciples QUESTION, “How can this be?!” John 6:53 – 59 – Jesus EXPLAINS Himself AGAIN and AGAIN John 6:60 – Disciples QUESTION again, “This saying is hard; who can accept it?!” John 6:61 – 65 – Jesus EXPLAINS Himself AGAIN John 6:66 – Disciples LEAVE and NO longer FOLLOW Him

“This saying is hard…” ONLY TIME in SS disciples leave because Jesus’ teaching is TOO HARD. Early Church believed in REAL PRESENCE of Eucharist; until PROTESTANT REFORMATION, all Christians (including Martin Luther) believed in REAL PRESENCE.

Yeah, it is! Were Jesus speaking SYMBOLICALLY (like He OFTEN did), the disciples would probably NOT have walked AWAY and CEASED following Him… This saying is DIFFICULT, but it also makes SENSE…

So close to you… Think of the ways people get closer to things and to other people… FOOD is one of them! – Jesus places Himself WITHIN us – Jesus FEEDS, NOURISHES, STRENGTHENS, SUSTAINS, etc. us! Once again… – HUMILITY – LOVE

To the CCC! Check the Table of Contents… Then check the Index… Pick an SS, ST, and M… Be ready to explain a Eucharistic Miracle…

Heading Topic Topic # M citation SS citation ST citation God = Truth

God teaches that (Jesus Christ is truly present, Body and Blood, in the Eucharist), and the M (insert M reference) helps us to understand this truth as it continues to interpret SS and ST. The SS reference (insert SS reference) reveals that (explain significance of SS reference), and the ST reference (insert ST reference) reveals that (explain significance of ST reference).

In Conclusion… “For those who BELIEVE, no explanation is NECESSARY. For those who do NOT believe, no explanation is POSSIBLE.” (St. Thomas Aquinas) God wants us to USE our INTELLECT! – Sacred Scripture – Eucharistic Miracles

WDCDT?! #8 Quiz In addition to the SS, ST, and M references and explanations… Be able to explain one (of the three) Eucharistic Miracles stories covered in class. Make sure it all ties back to the belief that JESUS is TRULY PRESENT (Body and Blood) in the Eucharist!!!

The End

To Whom It May Concern… Write a brief response (at least 5 – 7 sentences) to the person (people) who posted the Eucharistic Desecration videos… Incorporate the Church’s teaching in your response. (ie. Cite at least one SS or Eucharistic Miracle reference.)
