1 Hard v Soft Engineering
Evaluate different types of flood management scheme Outcomes: Identify how integrated methods of flood control reduce flooding Compare hard and soft engineering techniques Evaluate flood control in York compared to Darlington Homework due in: Flood Advice leaflet

2 Categorise the flood prevention method
Flood warning systems Washlands Levee / embankment Dam Flood relief Channel Channelisation Can you name the method of flood control? Sort these into Hard and Soft engineering Can you define the difference? Which one is missing? Afforestation

3 Market Place In Groups – You will be given a type of flood prevention scheme Create a poster – no more than 10 words Explain how it works Must show advantages and disadvantages Is it HARD or soft engineering

4 What flood defences can you spot on this map?

5 Will one defence do? Most river flooding will be prevented or controlled by lots of different methods used together Look at the figure 15 on page 96 Q: Explain which flood prevention methods are better suited for the upper or lower course of the river and why? [4] DME: What are the factors used to decide the type of engineering method used? [4]

6 Extention: Skills builder page 97
Answer part a) to c)

7 Hard v Soft Read the two case studies
Page 98 – Hard engineering and flooding in York Page 99 – Alternative approaches on the River Skerne near Darlington Copy the table on page 99 to summarise the advantages and disadvantages of hard and soft engineering.

8 Plenary Read through the ‘You should know’ list - Tick off the things that you are confident that you know and understand. This means that you could easily explain it to a non-geographer at home – identify things you don’t know or are unsure of. Double check the ‘Key terms’ Match them to the definitions Provide copy of page 100

9 Homework Choose the correct level of question for you and answer it as fully as you can, you may need to do some additional research... FOUNDATION Q Using a named example, describe the impacts of river flooding [6] HIGHER Q Explain how human and physical factors can increase flood risk [6] Resources – photocopy page 92/93, possible flood research York or Tewkesbury, or general UK 2007 flooding (BBC web pages). Could also use 2011 Queensland or Brazil. Look at examiners comments on page 101
