1. 1 The Suffering Servant Isaiah 53:1-7 KJV 1Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? 2For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness (majesty); and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. 3He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem (considered) him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised (Crushed) for our iniquities: the chastisement of our/that brought us peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

2. 2 Isaiah Isaiah lived during the time of the prophets Amos, Hosea, and Micah. The Kingdom of Israel that was united under Kings David and Solomon became divided during the reign of Solomon's son, Rehoboam beginning in 922 BC (First Kings 12). The Northern Kingdom comprised of ten tribes rebelled under Jeroboam and was called Israel or Ephraim. Judah and Benjamin became the Southern Kingdom of Judah. The Northern Kingdom of Israel was destroyed by the Assyrians in 722 BC (Second Kings 17). Exiles to Assyria were absorbed into the culture and lost their identity - they are often called the "Ten Lost Tribes of Israel."

The message of deliverance/restoration God’s people.  Arm of the LORD: God’s strength.  No form nor comeliness-Not attractive to the worldly-minded  Esteemed him not: Didn’t regard as honorable. 3

The Suffering Servant ISAIAH 53:4MATTHEW 8:16-17 4Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem (considered) him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.  16When evening came, many who were demon- possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.  17This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: "He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.“  The Holy Spirit applies this prophecy of Isaiah as to Jesus’ earthly healing ministry and not to His atoning work of death on the cross. “He healed that it might be fulfilled.” This did not occur on the cross but before in his public ministry. The purpose was to affirm that His person and message were from God.  It does not say He died for our infirmities and diseases, but rather that He took them and bore them. This means Christ took away their sicknesses by removing them, by having compassion on the people, taking their sufferings and carrying them away before His death. 4

The Suffering Servant ISAIAH 53:5 A MATTHEW 8:16-17 5But he was wounded (pierced) for our transgressions, he was bruised (Crushed) for our iniquities (sins):  Revelation 1:5 “To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood.”  Heb 9:22-Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins. (Not healing for sickness). 5But he was wounded for our transgressions: Wounded (pierced) for our transgressions(breaking God’s Law)  bruised (Crushed) for our iniquities (Sins)….When Crushed? Matthew 26:36-39 36Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to His disciples, "Sit here while I go over there and pray. 37And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy. 38Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me. 39And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. 5

6. The Suffering Servant ISAIAH 53:5 B HEB 5:8-9 the chastisement of our/that brought us peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Chastisement- to discipline - to train, admonish-Bring in to obedience. Heb 5:8-9  8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; 9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; 6

7. The Suffering Servant ISAIAH 53:5 B 1 PETER 2:24 and with his stripes we are healed.  This is in reference to our transgressions and sins being removed at the cross.  Hebrew-chabbuwrah-meaning bound (with stripes), (or black-and-blue mark itself):  The root word is chabar-1- to unite, to join, to bind together, to be joined, to be coupled, to be in league, to heap up, to have fellowship with, to unite, to join oneself to, to make an alliance.  When the Scripture says by His stripes we were healed, it means our healing came through being united to God spiritually. We now have fellowship where sin once kept us from it. While this does not dismiss the possibility of physically healing, but it in no way guarantees it.  24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.  Peter applies this to the cross and the spiritual healing of sins; he says nothing about the healing of diseases in our now mortal bodies. 7

8. The Suffering Servant ISAIAH 53:61 PETER 2:25 6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.  25For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. 8

9. The Suffering Servant Isaiah 53:10 10Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. Matthew 26:28 28For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. 9

The Suffering Servant 1 Cor 15:23-26 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the first fruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming. 24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. 25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death. Revelation 21:3-5 3And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them, 4and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away." 5And He who sits on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all things new." And He said, "Write, for these words are faithful and true."… 10
