“The Life of David – 22” 08/09/2009 Dr. Dane Boyles

“The Life of David – 22” In our last study we left Absalom on bended knee, being kissed by his father David. Absalom’s rage, which lit Joab’s field of barley ablaze, now will burn across an entire nation in a conspiracy of hatred. Now he conspires to strike deep wounds in his father’s heart.

“The Life of David – 22”  Prelude to Rebellion (15:1-12) 1 In the course of time, Absalom provided himself with a chariot and horses and with fifty men to run ahead of him. (2 Sam. 15:1)

2 Samuel 15:2 2 He would get up early and stand by the side of the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone came with a complaint to be placed before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out to him, “What town are you from?” He would answer, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.”

2 Samuel 15:3 3 Then Absalom would say to him, “Look, your claims are valid and proper, but there is no representative of the king to hear you.”

2 Samuel 15:4 4 And Absalom would add, “If only I were appointed judge in the land! Then everyone who has a complaint or case could come to me and I would see that he gets justice.”

2 Samuel 15:5-6 5 Also, whenever anyone approached him to bow down before him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him and kiss him. 6 Absalom behaved in this way toward all the Israelites who came to the king asking for justice, and so he stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

2 Samuel 15:7-8 7 At the end of four years, Absalom said to the king, “Let me go to Hebron and fulfill a vow I made to the LORD. 8 While your servant was living at Geshur in Aram, I made this vow: ‘If the LORD takes me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the LORD in Hebron.’ ”

“The Life of David – 22” 9 The king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he went to Hebron. 10 Then Absalom sent secret messengers throughout the tribes of Israel to say, “As soon as you hear the sound of the trumpets, then say, ‘Absalom is king in Hebron.’ ”

2 Samuel 15:11 11 Two hundred men from Jerusalem had accompanied Absalom. They had been invited as guests and went quite innocently, knowing nothing about the matter.

2 Samuel 15:12 12 While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he also sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, to come from Giloh, his hometown. And so the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept on increasing.

“The Life of David – 22” It is sad that after years of aged weakness, David is unable to discern the deception; he sends Absalom away to Hebron in peace (shalom).

“The Life of David – 22”  Exit to Exile (15:13-16) 13 Then a messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.” (15:13, NASB)

“The Life of David – 22” David’s kingdom is collapsing under his feet. What are the emotions that are churning inside him on this day? What is he to do? What do you do when the consequences of life come raging back to slap you in the face?

“The Life of David – 22” What happens when you reap what you sow? What do you do? Can God’s name be mentioned? Can his presence be sought? What follows is one of the most beautiful literary masterpieces in Scripture.

“The Life of David – 22” In some ways this text is overwhelming. There is so much that is happening all at once.  There is the initial story.  Then there is a story within and a story layered upon the story.  There is the intense narrative of a large and hurried retreat from a military stronghold.

“The Life of David – 22”  There is all the palace intrigue of a military coup and subsequent contra coup.  There is the story of David falling headlong on his face before God that is superimposed on the whole story.

“The Life of David – 22”  There is the story of David as a Christ figure as he descends from his palace, crosses the Kidron and ascends the Mount of Olives and then descending again into the wilderness of God.

2 Samuel 15:14 14 Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, “Come! We must flee, or none of us will escape from Absalom. We must leave immediately, or he will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin upon us and put the city to the sword.”

2 Samuel 15:15-16 15 The king’s officials answered him, “Your servants are ready to do whatever our lord the king chooses.” 16 The king set out, with his entire household following him; but he left ten concubines to take care of the palace.

“The Life of David – 22”  Descent to the Kidron (15:17-18) 17 So the king set out, with all the people following him, and they halted at a place some distance away. (2 Sam. 15:17)

2 Samuel 15:18 18 All his men marched past him, along with all the Kerethites and Pelethites; and all the six hundred Gittites who had accompanied him from Gath marched before the king.

“The Life of David – 22” David doesn’t run away in secret. 18 … all the six hundred Gittites who had accompanied him from Gath marched before the king. (2 Sam. 15:18)

“The Life of David – 22”  A Mirror of Loyal-love (15:19-23) 19 The king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why should you come along with us? Go back and stay with King Absalom. You are a foreigner, an exile from your homeland. (2 Sam. 15:19)

2 Samuel 15:20 20 You came only yesterday. And today shall I make you wander about with us, when I do not know where I am going? Go back, and take your countrymen. May kindness and faithfulness be with you.”

2 Samuel 15:21 21 But Ittai replied to the king, “As surely as the LORD lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be.”

2 Samuel 15:22-23 22 David said to Ittai, “Go ahead, march on.” So Ittai the Gittite marched on with all his men and the families that were with him. 23 in life they were loved and gracious, and in death they were not parted.

“The Life of David – 22” One gaze into Ittai’s face, and there appears a mirror reflecting the face of Jonathan, risen from the dead. 23 The whole countryside wept aloud as all the people passed by. The king also crossed the Kidron Valley, and all the people moved on toward the desert. (2 Sam. 15:23)

“The Life of David – 22”  Reflections on David’s Descent into the Dust Direction for those in David’s plight  Do you find yourself in David’s plight today?

“The Life of David – 22” Appreciation for Jesus’ humiliation  As we move from the David story to the Jesus story, we gain a deeper appreciation for our Lord’s humiliation.  David’s route of flight was the exact route Jesus took when he made his Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, but in reverse.

Hebrews 12:22 22 for the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning the shame.

“The Life of David – 22” Encouragement to be an Ittai.  Be an Ittai to Christ.  Identify with Jesus in his shame.

Hebrews 13:13 13 Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore. 14 For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come.

“The Life of David – 22”  Finally, be an Ittai to those who are in Christ by identifying with them in the moment they embrace their shame.
