Is the data valid all the time no matter how it is collected? Why do you have to be educated about Statistics and data collection?

7 Data Table A data table is an arrangement of data in which each row represents a case and each column represents a variable. 7 A case is an individual about whom or which we have data. A variable holds information about the same characteristic for many cases.

16 Example In a recent survey, 3002 adults in the United States were asked if they read news on the Internet at least once a week. Six hundred of the adults said yes. Identify the population and the sample. Describe the data set. 16 The population consists of the responses of all adults in the US. The sample is a subset of 3002 of the responses of all adults in the US. The data set consists of 600 yes’s and 2402 no’s.

17 WARM UP In March 2007, Consumer Reports published an evaluation of large-screen, high-definition television sets (HDTVs). The magazine purchased and tested 98 different models from a variety of manufacturers. What are the population of interest and the sample of this study? 17 Population: The magazine is interested in the performance of all HDTVs currently being offered for sale. Sample: The magazine tested a sample of 98 sets, the Who for these data.

18 Example The marketing company J.D. Power and Associates surveys consumers to learn about buyer behavior and customer satisfaction for many products worldwide. For example, J.D. Power’s Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) studies examine what people like about their car’s performance and design. The 2008 Japan Mini-Car APEAL study looked at 38 different mini-car models from seven manufacturers. J.D. Power based this report on responses from 4255 people who had recently purchased new mini-cars. 18 Describe the population of interest. What was the sample? All mini-cars. 4225 recently purchased mini-cars.

What conclusions might be drawn from the study using inferential statistics? A large sample of men, aged 48, was studied for 18 years. For unmarried men, approximately 70% were alive at age 65. Often involves the use of computers. Automobile manufacturers use simulations with dummies to study the effects of crashes on humans.

Confounding variables  Occurs when an experimenter cannot tell the difference between the effects of different factors on a variable.  A coffee shop owner remodels her shop at the same time a nearby mall has its grand opening. If business at the coffee shop increases, it cannot be determined whether it is because of the remodeling or the new mall.

Completely randomized design  Subjects are assigned to different treatment groups through random selection. Randomized block design  Divide subjects with similar characteristics into blocks, and then within each block, randomly assign subjects to treatment groups.

To test a vaccine against a strain of influenza, 10,000 people are given the vaccine and another 10,000 people are given a placebo. Because of the sample size, the effectiveness of the vaccine would most likely be observed.

Identify a potential problem with the given experimental design and suggest a way to improve it. The company identifies one thousand adults who are heavy smokers. The subjects are divided into blocks according to gender. After two months, the female group has a significant number of subjects who have quit smoking.

The new gum may have a greater effect on women than men, or vice versa. Assign a number to each member of the population. Members of the population that correspond to these numbers become members of the sample.

To collect a stratified sample of the number of people who live in West Ridge County households, you could divide the households into socioeconomic levels and then randomly select households from each level.
