5. ELEMENTS Pure substance A substance that can’t be broken down into a simpler substance by ordinary chemical changes Contains only a single type of atom It doesn’t matter how many atoms it contains as long as all of the atoms are the same type More than 100 elements

6. COMPOUNDS A substance that consists of two or more different types of atoms bonded together to form a new substance Can only be separated by breaking the bonds between the atoms

7. MIXTURES A combination of different substances that remain the same individual substances and can be separated by physical means Most matter around you is a mixture of different substances Examples of mixtures: fruit salad, salad dressing

8. 2 TYPES OF MIXTURES HETEROGENEOUS MIXTURE: when two or more substances do not mix evenly or thoroughly (example – soil) HOMOGENEOUS MIXTURE: a mixture in which different materials are blended evenly so that the mixture is the same throughout (example – sugar water, homogenized milk)
