Agenda – 1:00-2:30  Why technology for speaking & listening?  CCRS Speaking & Listening Overview  Northstar Digital Literacy Standards – now with PowerPoint!  What does effective technology-enriched instruction look like?  Learner-created project example Think-Pair-Share  Adaptable Unit Plan Outlines  Activity ideas & resources for Stage 1

Agenda – 2:45-4:00  Stage 2: Learners as creators! How to make it happen.  You try it! Make a video or PowerPoint  More activity ideas & resources  Adapting the Unit Plan Outline  Wrap-up

All adult learners need digital literacy skills to succeed – at work and in their communities.

It’s never too late or too early for learners to develop digital literacy.

CCRS Speaking & Listening  Why do we need them?  Basically 3 domains:  Academic discussions & collaboration  In-class presentations  Evaluating information presented orally  Challenges & Opportunities  What are you already doing?

Northstar – Now with PowerPoint!  www.digitalliteracyassessment.org www.digitalliteracyassessment.org

What does effective technology-enriched instruction look like?

The “SAFE” Lens  Seamless  Appropriate  Facilitated  Empowering Dillon-Marable & Valentine, Optimizing Computer Technology Integration, Adult Basic Education, Vol. 16, No. 2, (2006), pp. 99-117.

Seamless  Teachers and students move easily between technology-integrated instruction and instruction in other formats.  Technology is available to use on demand.  Technology is “just another tool” like a whiteboard or a pencil.  Technology is used in a contextualized manner, in service to content learning goals

Appropriate for…  Adults  Literacy learners  Learning!  The task at hand – don’t use technology just because, use it because it’s the best tool for the job.

Facilitated  Teacher is actively engaged with students as they use technology.  Teacher’s role is designer & facilitator: She plans activities that students engage with and then facilitates that engagement.

Facilitated

Learners are empowered when:  T hey acquire transferrable skills that will help them achieve their goals and fulfill their adult responsibilities.  Instruction leads them to become self-directed learners and explorers.  They become creators and producers of content rather than consumers only.  Technology use is interactive (rather than passive) and they make decisions, exercising control and choice.  They understand the technology (the whys and hows) – as opposed to memorizing a process or following rote step-by-step instructions.

Future Ready Learning  2016 National Education Technology Plan  http://tech.ed.gov/netp http://tech.ed.gov/netp

Learner-Created Video THINK – PAIR – SHARE  https://youtu.be/Jiwmx491NKA https://youtu.be/Jiwmx491NKA

Adaptable Unit Plan Outlines  Stage 1: Learners as Information/Media Consumers  Modeling  Evaluating  Discussion  Stage 2: Learners as Creators  Scaffolding  Technology instruction  Making a project

Gradual Release of Control Each stage works through an explicit instruction model:  Explanation  Modeling  Guided Practice  Independent Practice

Activity Ideas & Resources for Stage 1 Evaluation rubrics YouTube: How to Build a Snowman https://youtu.be/206yVUMtQBs YouTube: Why You Should Eat Breakfast https://youtu.be/esze4bNbOZY How do rubrics ensure students meet CCR standards?

More Activity Ideas & Resources for Stage 1  Summarizing worksheet for presentations  Resources for videos & sample PowerPoints  Video warm-up to good/bad presentations  https://youtu.be/S5c1susCPAE https://youtu.be/S5c1susCPAE

Break time!

Agenda – 2:45-4:00  Stage 2: Learners as creators! How to make it happen.  You try it! Make a video or PowerPoint  More activity ideas & resources  Adapting the Unit Plan Outline  Wrap-up

Learners as Creators How to Make it Happen  Activities & Resources for Stage 2 of the Unit Plan Outline  Lessons on how to research online  Outlines and Brainstorming  Templates  Sentence frames  Storyboards

Technology Instruction  Take some time with the technology before introducing it to your students  Keep it basic… this is not a computer training class  Give students time to simply explore the technology

The Next Steps of Stage 2 Before Showtime!  The first draft  A bit more about technology… taking the presentation to the next level  The final draft  It’s show time! Students show their presentations/videos to their classmates  Evaluation  Students evaluate their own  Students evaluate their classmates’ work

You Try It! Pick a project.

Reflection on the Project  What standards (at what level) did this project address?  How did the storyboard help you complete your project?  What other supports would your learners need to be able to do a similar project?  Looking at your Unit Plan Outline, what kinds of activities would you do to lead up to this project?

Adapting the Unit Plan Outline  Pick either the Video or the PowerPoint Unit Plan Outline.  In the notes section for each step, jot down activity ideas that would work in your context.

Resources, Resources and More Resources
