Background Cancer in adolescence and young adulthood is a relatively rare event There are special physical, reproductive, social, emotional and spiritual consequences of cancer occurrence, and needs for medical, psychological and social services for this population. Few analyses have been done to assess the cancer burden in this population

3. Purpose To analyze the distributions and time trend of cancer and to identify unique cancer patterns among adolescence and young adults in Florida.

4. Methods Data –Florida Cancer Data System in 1981-2006 –Age 15-39 Analysis –Age-specific rate –By race and sex

5. Number of New Cases 3,900 new cases diagnosed in 2006 –3.9% of all cancer cases –1,545 males, and 2,353 females –547 blacks and 3,160 whites

6. Age-specific Incidence Rate Age-specific rate: 66.9 /100,000 in 2006 –Males: 52.0 (50-55), Females: 82.2 (79-86) –Blacks: 46.4 (43-50), Whites: 70.9 (69-73)

7. Number of Deaths 554 deaths in 2006 –1.4% of all cancer deaths –270 males, and 284 females –115 blacks and 424 whites

8. Age-specific Mortality Rate Age-specific rate: 9.7 /100,000 in 2006 –Males: 9.1 (8.0-10.2), Females: 9.9 (8.8-11.1) –Blacks: 9.8 (8.1-11.7), Whites: 9.5 (8.6-10.5)
