ERA-Instruments Thomas Gübitz, Johannes Janssen, Christian Renner, Bonn, 4 Februar 2008 Infrastructure Funding in the Life Sciences

ERA-Instruments - association of universities and academies 50% of research is in Universities (~100) 50% of research is outside Universities (in public research organisations) What is the DFG? A key player in German research DFG: ~ 2 billion € budget 85% 15%

ERA-Instruments Overview Thomas Gübitz, Johannes Janssen, Christian Renner, Bonn, 4 Februar 2008  Scope, Objectives and Aims of ERA-Instruments  Background and „Genesis“  Partners and Structure  Work Packages and Tasks

ERA-Instruments Scope of ERA-Instruments Network of funding agencies, research councils, ministries and charities active in funding of life science research infrastructures Duration: 3 years (1 April 2008 – 31 March 2011) 16 Partners from 12 European countries Budget: 1.2 Mio. Euros granted by European Commission in FP 7, ERA-NET scheme, Coordination Action Thomas Gübitz, Johannes Janssen, Christian Renner, Bonn, 4 Februar 2008

ERA-Instruments Why Bioanalytical Instrumentation? Instrumentation development is extremely fast for instance genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics Established techniques are increasingly used to study biological samples for instance NMR, mass spectrometry, x-ray, electron microscopy This is (partly) accompanied by increasing costs for instance NMR, mass spectrometry, electron microscopy, light microscopy Leading to new concepts how to use resources efficiently for instance core facilities, creation of centres Thomas Gübitz, Johannes Janssen, Christian Renner, Bonn, 4 Februar 2008

ERA-Instruments Objectives of ERA-Instruments Create a network of stakeholders for instrumentation funding (life sciences) Set up comprehensive tools for adequate treatment of instrumentation related topics surveys, user workshops, study tours, identification of emerging RI needs,... Focus on midsize bioanalytical instrumentation typically 500 k€ to ~20 M€, i.e. NMR, MS, microscopy, microarray platforms, post- genomic high-throughput techniques,... Foster contacts with scientists Thomas Gübitz, Johannes Janssen, Christian Renner, Bonn, 4 Februar 2008

ERA-Instruments Non-Objectives of ERA-Instruments establish new bureaucratic obstacles joint calls discuss lab equipment well below 500 k€ which does not require a transnational discussion discuss projects of ESFRI size Thomas Gübitz, Johannes Janssen, Christian Renner, Bonn, 4 Februar 2008

ERA-Instruments Relations of ERA-Instruments Thomas Gübitz, Johannes Janssen, Christian Renner, Bonn, 4 Februar 2008

ERA-Instruments General Aims of ERA-Instruments Discuss technique related issues and funding needs for bioanalytical instrumentation Discuss boundary conditions for appropriate use of modern techniques Provide information for national funding agencies to react on new developments Improve national funding schemes by analysis of best practice Thomas Gübitz, Johannes Janssen, Christian Renner, Bonn, 4 Februar 2008 Improve the funding possibilities for life scientists Maximize access of scientists to leading edge instrumentation

ERA-Instruments Scientific Advisory Board Input from scientists is needed to point the activities of ERA-Instruments in the right direction. At the five strategy workshops, the following questions are addressed:  What are the most important classes of instrumentation requiring European discussion (for the near future)?  What are upcoming directions in technological developments?  What are scientists’ views of the various funding schemes? How to improve?  How should cutting edge instrumentation be optimally operated? In core- facilities?  How should transnational access to instrumentation facilities be organized?  How can the development of new technologies and the transfer to research labs be accelerated? Thomas Gübitz, Johannes Janssen, Christian Renner, Bonn, 4 Februar 2008
