How would you describe the world around you? Places People Things? GEOGRAPHY IS THE STUDY OF THE EARTH’S PHYSICAL FEATURES AND THE LIVING THINGS (HUMANS, ANIMALS, AND PLANTS)

Locations?? Location- a specific place on the earth Absolute location- the exact spot at which the place is found on the globe Relative location- location in relation to other places

Is also known as two halves.

Grid System -Pattern formed as the lines of latitude and longitude cross one another

Places and Regions Place- a particular space with physical and human meaning (ex. Rio Grande City, your house) Regions- areas united by specific factors. (ex. Language, religion, vegetation)

Different Types of Regions Functional Region- A central point and the surrounding territory linked to it. (Ex. Metropolitan areas such as Los Angeles Perceptual Region- A region defined by popular feelings and images rather than by objective data. (Ex. “heartland” refers to a central area in which traditional values are believed to predominate. Formal Region- A region defined by a common characteristic, such as production of a product. (Ex. Crops)

Ecosystem A community of plants and animals that depend upon one another, and their surroundings, for survival.

Movement Ongoing movement of people, goods, and ideas.

Human-Environment Interaction The study of the inter-relationship between people and their physical environment. In other words, how the environment influences humans. (People living near water, building dams)
