Bach’s Cantata’s Christ lag in Todes Banden, BWV 4 (Christ lay in the bonds of death) One of Bach’s most widely known and complex Sacred Cantata’s written; consists of Orchestral Accompaniment and Chorus. Much like other choral music, it is written to portray a biblical moment/story. Very virtuosic vocal and orchestral lines. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oN_pooWIheA

Bach’s Oratorio’s In 1734 and 1735 (where was Bach?), he wrote three massive works for chorus, orchestra and soloists. The Christmas Oratorio, the Easter Oratorio and the Ascension Oratorio. The Christmas Oratorio is by far the largest and consists of 6 movements and is based on the texts of Luke and Matthew. The Ascension Oratorio is divided into 2 parts and uses texts from Luke, Mark and Acts. The Easter Oratorio is divided into 11 parts and uses the Libretto written by Picander

Oratorio’s Continued Easter Oratorio, Kommt, eilet und laufet (Come, hasten and run) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eL1k6I_RHN8 Ascension Oratorio, Lobett Gott in seinen Reichen (Laud to God in all his kingdoms) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GdPk3Izayv8 Christmas Oratorio, Jauchzet, frohlocket, auf, preiset die Tage (Rejoice, Rejoice, for, praise the day) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmfRYn4LIf8

Bach’s Motets Jesu, meine Freude’ (Jesus my friend) These works are multi movement works but seamlessly mesh together to create a holistic choral piece. In this particular work, the choir is mostly a Capella and occasionally uses organ as accompaniment. The text is almost always sacred and is in this instance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4SKrGYMp7A

More Motets Singet dem Herrn (Sing to the Lord) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc14Jv1eTUE Komm, Jesu, komm’ (Come, Jesus come) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJospfuv5po Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf (The Spirit helps our infirmities) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqubzmSF2Qg

Mass in B Minor The Mass in B Minor is considered by many to be Bach’s greatest achievement and one of the greatest compositions of all time and is widely performed today. This is also the last thing Bach composed, finishing it in 1749 shortly before his death. The Mass in B Minor is Bach’s setting of the complete Latin Ordinary of Mass and uses many elements of his previous works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxKR7BaitxM
