HIGH END DESKTOP WITHOUT HIGH END PRICE VIRGIL EDWARDS NET 499 SPRING 2016 EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY 1

INTRODUCTION 2 Areas covered by this project include Networking Choosing appropriate Wireless networking card & Bluetooth for highest performance and future use Computer Systems Choosing appropriate CPU, Motherboard, Hard Drive, Case, DVD drive, Video graphics card, OS, and appropriately putting it all together safely without damaging components and having contingency plans in place for replacing components that go bad

OUTLINE 3 1.Motivation 2.Problem Statement 3.Assumptions 4.Block Diagram 5.Brief Design 6.Results 7.Video 8.Future Work 9.Conclusion 10.References

MOTIVATION 4 Wanting a Desktop System that can serve a variety of high performance needs. Desire to play online video games with minimal lag and high graphics processing Desire to create/edit high quality resolution audio/video files Desire to experiment with multiple virtual machines at the same time Desire to build my own desktop computer Desire to not be limited by pre-built and pre-designed computer with little to no option for expandability

PROBLEM STATEMENT 5 Can a high performance desktop computer system that can survive 2 iterations of Moore’s Law and be expandable and be built for less than $1000.00? People buying pre-built systems from retail stores like BestBuy and Office Depot are limited to what someone else has designed when it comes to existing technology and have little to no availability for expansion High Performance system includes: Greater than 8 GB of RAM Solid State Drives 500 GB or greater 2GB or Greater Graphics Card True 8-core CPU LAN & WiFi Internet capabilities USB 3.0 & 3.1 Capable Bluetooth 4.0 and higher Expandable

ASSUMPTIONS 6 That people would want a high performance system That people would want to spend anywhere near $1000.00 on a desktop system That people would want to build their own desktop system That people would have the necessary skill to build their own desktop system That I would be able to build this system for less than $1000.00 That I would be able to build this system without damaging components. That the CPU I selected would continue to be the best performing CPU for the money

FUTURE WORK 13 Upgrade Video Graphics Card from current 2GB to 4-8 GB Upgrade RAM from current 16 GB to 64 GB Upgrade SSD storage capacity from 500GB to 1TB Upgrade CPU pending that an upgrade will still use the same socket configuration Upgrade from Bluetooth 4.0 to 4.2 Upgrade from a DVD Optical Disc Drive to a Blu-Ray drive Add a memory card reader that will read multiple memory card types SD, Micro-SDXC

CONCLUSION 14 You can build a high performance desktop system for under $1000.00 You can build a system that will retain its high performance status for years to come You can build a system that will allow you to expand on its capabilities You can say good-bye to purchasing pre-built, designed by someone else machines sold at retail stores
