3 As of Spring: We have 35 students and still growing! 58 mentors encompassing various fields Regularly check up on mentor- mentee contact Students invited to workshops, forums The goal is to have 20 students total participate; transfer students are highly encouraged, as well Each student will receive a faculty and staff mentor Mentors and mentees must meet at least once per semester Each semester, students will be invited to a mentor-led discussion, e.g., Careers in psychology and helping professions Fall Semester Goals

9 How do we match students with mentors? Application process (fall) Matching occurs after interview (spring) Already had mentors but wanted to be officially paired ▫Already meeting with faculty/staff but didn’t know first gen connection ▫Want to get to know someone “LT or Paul Factor”

10 What did we learn? Trust needs to be established Some pairings work immediately; some students need more time before getting a faculty mentor

11 What do the mentors provide? Network of support PRO-ACTIVE, hands on mentoring! ▫Sometimes interventions are necessary Unmasking the hidden curriculum ▫Be explicit about processes ▫Can’t make assumptions about students’ knowledge ▫Ultimately, encourage self-efficacy

17 What have we learned so far? Importance of referrals and name recall in recruitment of both mentees and mentors Need for coordination with student and both mentors Significance of inviting mentees to events that fit their interests and goals; e.g., grad school forums, career workshops
