HOW DOES GARDENING HELP OUR EARTH? Locally grown food saves energy and stops Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced by food transport (food miles) Gardens provide healthier options Gardens provide habitats for pollinators and worms Gardening allows for better soil management

TYPES OF GARDENS Vegetable garden Herb garden Native plant garden Pollinator garden Ornamental garden Classroom garden

PLANNING YOUR GARDEN When deciding what types of plants to put in your garden, think about… The location of the garden The hours of sunlight available The water needs of the plant How long it takes for the plant to grow Who will take care of the garden (all year round?)

FUN FACTS!! Soil has healthy microbes that make you happy! One cup of soil can have as many bacteria as there are people on Earth! A fruit comes from the flowering part of a plant and has seeds. A vegetable comes from all other plant parts (roots, leaves, stems)! The average meal travels 1200km to get to our plates – that’s like driving from Halifax to Montreal!

THANK YOU!
