Controlled Assessment: Geographical Investigation 10% of final grade To be able to explain what is meant by the phrase energy crisis To be able to explain why renewable energy sources are needed To be able to identify different viewpoints on Wind energy and to be able to explain people’s views

Renewable sources of energy

Pair work – write down 4 reasons why you think there is a move towards renewable sources of energy.

Energy Speed Dating I would like you to go around the room and ask 3 people about what they know about energy and the phrase “energy crisis”. Then we will go back to our places and ask them what they found out.

Setting the scene http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-14097567 Chris Huhne: Energy bill rise claims are nonsense http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-14097567 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment- 14030849 Green energy investment hits record global high http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment- 14030849 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-13837387 What are the wind power issues? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-13837387 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment- 13380536 Wind expansion divides community http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment- 13380536 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-13761915 Could renewables lower energy bills? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-13761915

Why is energy an issue? 1.Demand for energy is increasing as population is increasing – the energy gap is growing 2.We are running out of fossil fuels which provide over 80% of global energy supply 3.Our current pattern of energy use is environmentally damaging – the government have set a target of educing CO2 emissions by 20% of 1990 levels by 2010. Could wind power be the solution?

Why is the development of wind energy a controversial issue in the UK?  Remember the title of your investigation for this next exercise  Partner talk: Why do you need to speak about the energy crisis and renewable energy sources in your oral presentation?

Teacher Input We are going to watch The following clips “Energy Crisis” and “Renewables” from the Energy Debate DVD from Team Video productions. Add this to your evaluative bibliography now. 1.Watch and take notes on these clips – remember your note taking tips and remember your route to enquiry questions. 2.After watching the video – – do you have any questions you want to discuss? – What information could you use? – Can you make links with other sources of information you have already.

Research activity and Homework: 1.Compile a list of advantages and disadvantages of Wind power 2.Create a list of people for and against wind power and remember to write down evidence to justify their views. 3.Bring useful illustrations and images that could be used as prompts to be stuck onto your Sugar paper poster. 4.You will need to continue to add to your notes for homework. 5.Add to your evaluative bibliography

Resources: GCSE textbooks OCR C Jan 2010 – resource booklet Geography Review – photocopy – Jan 2005 BBC website is a good web based starting point. There are many news stories that you can use to draw out viewpoints
