2 Feudalism Middle Ages system of government in Europe and Japan Class system were the lord (or daimyo)serves the king (or Shogun) and the serf (or peasant)serves the lord

3 Middle Ages in Europe Charlemagne, the King of the Franks united Europe. Lords, vassals, and serfs lived on manors. Most people were peasants (or serfs). Serfs farmed and gave most of the harvest to the lord.

4 Middle Ages in Europe (cont.) Large cathedrals were built. Armies were made up of knights. Christian Knights fought Muslim Turks to control Jerusalem in the Crusades. Trade, cities, and technology grew after the Crusades.

5 Middle Ages in Europe (cont.) In 1340 the Bubonic Plague, or Black Death killed 25 million people. After Charlemagne died the government declined and the Vikings attacked – Europe divided into many small kingdoms again.

6 Middle Ages in Asia - China In China two important dynasties were the Tang and the Song. They invented gunpowder, the compass, and the printing press. An important trade route called the Silk Road was developed.

7 Middle Ages in Asia - China (cont.) Genghis Khan conquered Russia, Eastern Europe, Korea, and northern China. His grandson was Kublai Khan. Marco Polo of Venice, Italy visited Kublai Khan. Marco Polo’s book let Europeans learn about China which increased trade between China and Europe.

8 Middle Ages in Asia - Japan Japan was ruled by a Shogun. Minamoto Yoritomo was the first shogun in Japan. The samurai were the knights of Japan.

9 Monitor Comprehension When you monitor comprehension you: 1. Check your understanding as you read. 2. After you read, tell yourself what the text means. 3. Look for clues on the page to help you understand.

10 Understanding Chronological Order To understand chronological (or time) order you should look for dates and words like: -first -then -finally

11 Latitude and Longitude Latitude is horizontal …. _ Longitude is vertical …. l Look at the map on page 118 of your book. 1.Which line of latitude crosses both The Great Wall and the Silk Road? 2.What city is closest to 120 E longitude, 30 N latitude?

12 Scale of Miles Use a scale of miles to determine how many miles apart places are on a map. Look at the map on page 118 of your book About how many miles apart are Chang’an and Hongzhou?
