BALANCING LIFE’S ISSUES Parenting Your Teen At Risk Behavior

Good news – realities of today Bad news - essential facts Bottom Line – What we really need to know What NOT to do What to do Objectives

Realities of today. Begin a teen is not as risky as it used to be Fewer are sexually active Almost ALL wear seatbelts Drinking and Drug use in down 80% of kids DON’T smoke Fewer suicide attempts Good News

17% of teens do attempt suicide 35% of teens are sexually active 18% of teens carry a weapon 20% do smoke 45% of teens say they use alcohol 20% of teens use marijuana 79% don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables 25% play video or computer games more than 3 hours a day > 65% of kids don’t get enough exercise (25% get NONE) Teens engaging in one type of at risk behavior are likely doing others. Bad News

Most at risk behaviors are preventable Use facts to convince risky behavior is harmful i.e. The hippocampus (memory part of brain) is still developing in teens up to their 20’s and alcohol use destroys this part of the brain. Stay on top of the new trends: Robo-tripping Bottom Line

Don’t say…”What were you thinking?” - they really don’t know. Don’t coerce behavior or make idle threats. Don’t lump them in with what their peers are doing. Don’t confuse self-harm or “cutting” with suicide attempts. Don’t be naïve – educate yourself, be in touch with your teens friends parents. What Not to Do

What to do Encourage extra-curricular activities. Make a big deal when they DO make good choices. Encourage teens spirituality and thinking beyond themselves. Make it real – tell them a story about consequences of choices. If you are not good at communicating seek help from counselors who can do an ARI (Adolescent Risk Inventory) – a screening to determine likelihood a teen is engaged in at-risk behaviors.
