8 Chapter 2 Review “Early Hominids”
On the timeline above, color in the appropriate boxes for each hominid group. Use the colors below for each group. You will need to know the years for each group. Homo sapiens sapiens = blue Australopithecus Afarensis = black Homo habilis = yellow Homo erectus = red Homo sapien neanderthalensis = green Answer the following questions using complete sentences. What are the key capabilities of Australopithecus afarensis? Why are they important? What are the key capabilities of Homo habilis? What are the key capabilities of Homo erectus? 6. Why are they important? 4 million years BCE 3 million years BCE 2 million years BCE Timeline 1 million years BCE Today Australopithecus afarensis walked upright on two feet(biped) Because these hominids walked on two feet, they could use their arms to carry food, defend themselves, and protect their children. Homo habilis lived in groups. They were able to make simple tools from rocks. By living in groups, Homo habilis were able to better protect themselves. They used simple tools, they were able to get more food from the animals they hunted. Homo erectus knew how to make fire. Homo erectus developed the hand axe. More slender bones enabled them to be better runners and walkers, which allowed them to migrate. With fire, Homo erectus was able to cook their food, keep warm, and provided protection from animals. The hand axe helped them eat more food and build shelters.

9 scientist who studies human development and culture
What are the key capabilities of Homo sapiens neanderthalensis? Why are they important? What are the key capabilities of Homo sapiens sapiens? Neanderthals took care of their sick and injured. They crafted spears (60+ tools) for hunting and were the first to hunt in organized groups. Neanderthals lived longer because they took care of their sick and injured. Also, older group members shared their knowledge with younger group members. More complex tools and weapons made them better hunters and able to get more meat Homo sapiens sapiens created complex tools like bows and arrows, fishhooks, musical Instruments, paintbrushes and sewing needles. Homo sapiens sapiens complex tools allowed them to hunt for more food from a safer distance. They also used tools to make paintings and other art forms, which led to an advanced, complex language. 18 Bingo Terminology Hominids – prehistoric humans
Leakey's – Homo Habilis was discovered by…this husband and wife team Biped – 2 footed animal Homo Habilis – first hominid to use simple tools, work together in groups, crushed bone to take out the marrow Remains – a dead animal/body Johanson – discovered Lucy in Africa – Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds Migrate – move from one geographic region to another. Homo Erectus was the first Lived in groups – Homo Habilis was the first Homo Erectus – Upright Man, the first hominid to stand fully upright, and to migrate Anthropologist - social scientist who studies human development and culture Land bridge – Homo Sapiens came to North America by…. A piece of land connecting two continents Used Fire – Provided warmth and protection, and Homo Erectus was the first to use it Paleoanthropologist – social scientist who specializes in the study of the earliest humans Cave painting and artists – This was a way Homo sapiens sapiens expressed themselves and taught their children Used simple tools – stones for scraping, rocks for crushing , and bones for digging were examples of what Homo Habilis were the first to use Africa – Homo Habilis and Austrolopiticus were ONLY found here. All hominid fossils were found here Homo sapiens Neanderthalensis – First to bury or care for the sick and injured, hunted in groups with ONLY spears, Wise Man Ocher – a yellow colored mud which Homo Erectus used to color their skin Developed bow and arrow - this allowed for Homo sapiens sapiens to hunt safety from a distance Capabilities - skills Homo sapiens sapiens - cave artists German Neander Valley – Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis were first discovered here Australopithecus afarensis – carry her young, biped, collect and gathered food 60+ tools – Neanderthals created more these, including, DETAILED knives, scrapers and spear points buried/cared for sick/injured – Neanderthals did this which gave them a sense of community Great walkers and runners – Homo erectus were able to migrate because of this… 1st to migrate – Homo erectus were the first to do this to Europe and Asia The America’s – Homo sapiens sapiens made it to here across a landbridge
