2 Recapitulation To get your minds thinking back to lessons, complete the crossword which looks at points from last lesson. – You have ten minutes.

3 Aims and objectives Today, we shall be looking at the following: – The exercise referral process: What is it How does it work Who does it apply to – You will be required to be able to describe the process (P2). – The benefits of exercise for some of the specific groups: The three areas of benefit The individual benefits from selected specific groups – You will be required to describe and explain the benefits of exercise to the selected specific group. – The prescription of exercise for certain specific groups: What they should be doing How intense How frequent How long per session – Again, you will be required to describe these prescriptions.

4 Some questions Who here knows anything about the referral process? Who can get referred? Where are people getting referred to? What are the criteria for getting referred? What do referred people actually do?

5 Answers to the fundamental questions about the process Who can get referred? – People who have visited their G.P. or another health provider. Where are people getting referred to? – A health centre, a leisure centre, a gymnasium. What are the criteria for getting referred? – You must be over 19 – It is for people who are inactive or sedentary and are otherwise healthy or who have an existing health condition or other risk factors for disease. What do referred people actually do? – The process focuses on exercise referral schemes that try to increase physical activity among people. – This may include sessions with a personal trainer, or having a programme worked out for you. – It may also involve joining a specific exercise class or group. – It could also involve a prescribed swimming plan, especially for obese people.

6 The referral process This consists of stages which work in order, there are no short cuts. A person can ask to be referred, or they may be just referred when they visit a health professional or a general practitioner. Once referred, they are placed upon a scheme.

7 The exercise referral process Person visits their GP GP refers them to a health/fitness provider Exercise professional conducts some tests 12 week exercise plan set for client Plan gets monitored and evaluated at 3/6/9 weeks After 12 weeks, client will hopefully continue with a healthy, exercise filled life

10 Benefits of exercise Next, we are going to look at some of the specific groups and the benefits of exercise to them.

11 Benefits of exercise When looking at the benefits of exercise, what are the three areas of benefit that exercise benefits can be grouped into? They are: – Psychological – Physiological – Sociological

12 Physical benefits of exercise for the obese Obesity in Britain Get into groups of three. Next, using the paper provided, divide the paper into three columns. Then, write these three headings at the top of each column: – Physiological – Psychological – Sociological Now, working with each other come up with a descriptive list of the benefits for the obese under each of the headings. – I want to see what the benefit is, how it is a benefit and how an obese person would benefit. – You have 15 minutes.

13 Benefits of exercise for the obese In addition to your benefits, we are going to be looking at some others. As we go through the list, I want you to tell me and the rest of the class how it is a benefit and the effect on an obese person: – Loss of body fat. – Increase in muscle. – improvements in body composition – Raised metabolic rate. – Improvements in medical conditions. – More energy. – Better able to perform daily functions. – Improved self-esteem and body image – The opportunity to meet people and develop friendships

14 Checking of learning Class, referring back to our initial aims, are you now able to: – Explain the benefits of exercise for obese people? If not, where are you going wrong?

15 Prescription of exercise Still working in your groups, I would like you to discuss and come up with some exercise prescription for obese people for: – Cardiovascular based exercise – Resistance based exercise – Flexibility training You have ten minutes

16 Recommendations The following recommendations for exercise for obese people are from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM): – Cardiovascular exercise Frequency 5 to 7 a week Intensity 60 to 70% of maximum Time 20 to 60 minutes Type Non-weight bearing, low impact such as rowing, cycling or walking – Resistance training Frequency 2 to 3 a week Intensity 10 to 15 reps to form failure Time 8 to 10 exercises, 1 or 2 sets Type Large muscle groups, limit weight bearing on the lower limb – Flexibility training Frequency 5 to 7 times a week Intensity To point of mild discomfort Time 6 to 8 stretches on all major muscle groups Type Use standing stretches if they have trouble with mobility

17 Next specific group The next group that we will be looking at are pre/ante natal women. With the sheets that you have, I would like you to flip the sheet over and do as you did before, with the three columns. – You have 15 minutes.

18 Benefits of exercise for pre/ante natal women In addition to the benefits you came up with, some other benefits are: Promote weight loss Improve self-image Return tone to abdominal muscles Return strength to stretched muscles Return flexibility to shortened muscles Improve posture

19 Recommendations for exercise What things should antenatal women not be doing? Some ideas The Edexcel recommendations are: – Choose low-impact aerobic exercise – Only use maintenance stretching – Start off with very gentle stomach exercises, such as stomach tightening – Ensure good posture and work to loss of form on resistance exercises – Include pelvic floor exercises in every session. Remember, you need to be able to describe why these are important for antenatal women or, to put it another way, to describe the benefits of these types of exercise for antenatal women.
