Volcano Notes Volcano – a place (usually a mountain) where magma reaches the earth’s surface

Magma Chamber Lava- Vent- Crater- The opening in the volcano Erupted magma Pit at the top of the volcano

What can come out of a volcano?

1. Lava: molten rock that flows or oozes onto the earth’s surface

2. Pyroclastic flows: hot avalanches of ash and gas

3. Tephra: gases and fragments of rock and lava sent high into the sky

4. Lahars: flows of mud, rock and water

Three Types of Volcanoes 1. Cinder cone: made from explosive eruptions of small particles of rock

Three Types of Volcanoes 2. Shield volcano: made of slow lava flows

Three Types of Volcanoes 3. Composite volcano: made of slow lava flows and explosive eruptions of cinders

Three Classifications of Volcanoes: 1. Active Volcano: has erupted recently or might erupt soon

2. Dormant volcano: has been quiet for a long time, but still has signs it may erupt again (still has a magma chamber)

3.Extinct volcano: has not erupted for thousands of years and cannot erupt again (magma chamber gone)

Advantages and Disadvantages of Volcanoes AdvantagesDisadvantages
