2 Question Facilitation Tools  What do they do?  Allow students to ask questions online during class.  Allow students to vote on one another’s questions.  Benefits  More students will ask questions.  The instructor can gauge which student questions are of interest to most students: Q and A time becomes more efficient.

9 Concept Mapping Tools  What do they do?  Visually depict the relationships of things in a system.  Nodes can be linked to online resources.  Branches can be dynamic: open them, close them.  Benefits  Help students apprehend connections among things.  Facilitate deeper learning.  An alternative to traditional assignments.

18 Screencasting Tools  What do they do?  Capture whatever is on the screen of your PC or mobile device as you narrate.  Share your screencast with others in YouTube or LEARN.  Benefits  Deliver “remedial” content to get all students up to speed.  Introduce key concepts to students in advance of class.  Deliver content to students outside of class, so class time can be spent on learning activities.

20 Screencasting Tools  Recommended platform: Camtasia  $90 on campus from The Chip  Records, edits, renders.  When editing, you can add titles, call outs, arrows, and so on.  A good balance of features and ease of use.

25 Data Visualization Tools  What do they do?  Render mounds of data into visual representations that can reveal significant patterns.  Benefits  Increases student engagement with data.  Makes the incomprehensible comprehensible.

27 Data Visualization Tools  Recommended platform: Gapminder  Free.  Preloaded with more than 500 data sets from agencies such as WHO, the World Bank, EM-DAT, and so on.  Correlates up to 5 variables simultaneously.  Site includes useful videos and documentaries.
