8 Reasons for decrease in milk production Differential Milk procurement prices – Local - Rs. 16.50/- – Outsourcing - Rs. 22/- Steep rise in input prices – GNC (Rs.46/ Kg), Wheat bran (Rs.16/Kg) Decreasing area under fodder – 40,000 ha(2000) to 20,000 ha (2008) – Green fodder scarce input Farmers losing interest in dairy farming

13 Conclusions There is a yawning gap between the demand and supply of all livestock products in Puducherry and even with outside supply, the gap still exists, thanks to rapid urbanisation and industrialisation. It is an irony the livestock owners are not being benefitted by the ever increasing market potential for all livestock products in Puducherry.

14 Conclusions Dependency on neighbouring states for all the livestock products is increasing gradually at the cost of local productrion.. Decrease in milk procurement over the years is due to differential milk procurement prices (local Rs.16.5/- and outsourcing Rs.22/-) and low feed milk price ratios, and steep rise in the input prices. There is a shift in the occupation of dairy farmers to landless agricultural labour as the former is considered no more remunerative.
