GEF How does a PRTR work?PRTR air water soil PRTR Data Sources Data Access to Information Analysis

GEF Characteristics of a PRTR Periodicity Multimedia: air, water, soil Use of common identifiers for chemicals Information at the facility and location level Information processed Access to information to general public

GEF Global GEF project Project Objective: To demonstrate the utility of PRTRs to comply with Stockholm Convention obligations such as POPs monitoring, report, NIPs updating and information exchange and dissemination. Participating Countries: Chile, Ecuador, Peru (South America), Cambodia, Thailand (Asia), Ukraine and Kazakhstan (Europe). Central American Sub-region: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Dominican Republic. Outputs: PRTR implementation in Chile and PRTR design in other countries to comply with Stockholm Convention and Identification of lessons learned in each region.

Article 7 – Implementation plans, updating and reviewing action plans. Article 9 – Information exchange: Between Parties and POPs Secretariat Article 10 – Public information, awareness and education: information on POPs made public, public participation in POPs management, promotion and facilitation provision of information from industry and professional users, estimates annual quantities of POPs released or eliminated. Article 11 – Research, development and monitoring: Support data gathering, support of monitoring programmes in countries. Article 15 – Submission of reports: provide statistical dataor estimations on quantities of POPs Annexes A and B: List of POPs

GEF SAICM and GEF The GEF Global Project has a contribution of 100,800 USD from SAICM directed to Kazakhstan and Cambodia SAICM activities include upgrading National Chemicals Profiles, development of SAICM development assessment and the organization of a National Priority Setting Workshop

GEF SAICM and PRTRs The Objectives of the SAICM Overarching Policy Strategy, are oriented to: (a) Development or updating of national chemical profiles and the identification of capacity needs for sound chemicals management; (b) Development and strengthening of national chemicals management institutions, plans, programmes and activities to implement the Strategic Approach, building upon work conducted to implement international chemicals-related agreements and initiatives; c) Undertaking analysis, interagency coordination, and public participation activities directed at enabling the implementation of the Strategic Approach by integrating – i.e., mainstreaming – the sound management of chemicals in national strategies, and thereby informing development assistance cooperation priorities.
