2 Introduction Emily Kiger Clevenger, M.Ed ◦ Background- History and Lanaguage teacher for 10 years ◦ Adult Ed teacher at night for 1.5 years ◦ My job is to help you learn more about career options and schooling!

3 Main Purpose Use education as a tool for job training so you can attain a job OR a higher wage job. We will work to assist you in providing resources and motivation!

4 How? Help you learn skills for a high demand job or further your education into college or vocational school. Emphasize job readiness skills, employability skills, remediation, and through a strong connection with two year colleges, employers and the military. Aka. Typing, computer skills, resumes, interview practice

5 Why Career Readiness and Education? *2009 median annual earnings data come from the Bureau of Labor Statistics HS Dropout- $23,608 HS Graduate- $32,552 College Graduate- $53,300

6 What are some factors besides wage that make it harder for a dropout or someone with less education to earn money?

8 Minimum Wage The 2013 minimum wage in Florida is $7.79 per hour, effective January 1, 2013, with a minimum wage of at least $4.77 per hour for tipped employees, in addition to tips. $7.79x 40 hours= $311.60 $311.60 x.82 (18% taxes)=$255.51 take home x 4 weeks in month= $1,022.05 Budget $1,022.05 Rent? Car payment? Car insurance? Health care or doctor visit? Child care? Food? Gas? Bus pass? Clothes, fun?

11 HVAC Tech Only 15 months in Lake City at Gateway CC! Only 1 year program at Fl. State College in Jville!

12 Game! How long do you think it will take to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN) making $19.42hr/40,380yr?

13 At Gateway, only 45 credit hours which is only 15 classes! If you took 3 classes a semester that is less than two years! At FSCJ, only 1 year program! Is 12 month of extra effort worth that career?
