5 Division Corporate Management Prof. Dr.-Ing.Kai Mertins © 2006 EIC Launch, 5 Options for new vehicles 3 Minute film on FIDEUS Project: city suitable vehicle (built by IVECO, tested in Hannover, Project coordination DHL) Possible features of new vehicles: - clean energy (biodiesel, hybrid, biomass gas) - green material (hamp enforced fibres, sea wheat, exterior parts) - ergonomic / safe / suitable for disabled - flexible usage (persons and goods; quick change system) - telematic devices (location, routing, navigation, fleet mgt., order receipt) Example of former time: Post bus carrying mail, boxes, persons, bicycles, ski )

6 Division Corporate Management Prof. Dr.-Ing.Kai Mertins © 2006 EIC Launch, 6 Circumstances for more radical action in rural areas - Aging society (less car drivers; more visits at doctor) - young people moving away - little investments of large employers in rural areas - loss of farming jobs - difficult economic situation of small companies (loss of jobs  less income  less cars) - regional needs: transport, housing, energy, child care, care for elderly Historic experience (1800 - 1920) + contract work performed at home (craft, textiles, assembly) + cooperatives (most agriculture)

7 Division Corporate Management Prof. Dr.-Ing.Kai Mertins © 2006 EIC Launch, 7 Provide community production and service cooperative: - Assembly facility for contract work - Office facility and management - distribution and transport facilities - child care and canteen - vehicle maintenance - workshop for private work - construction facilities and tools Proposed concept (Fraunhofer and TU Berlin) Extended regional demand: - Create flexible jobs - Provide flexible transportation with low investment in vehicles and staff Multipurpose vehicles owned by cooperative and occasionally used for demand transport; drivers work on contract work and interrupt when called; Flexible use for commercial goods transportation and public transport

9 Division Corporate Management Prof. Dr.-Ing.Kai Mertins © 2006 EIC Launch, 9 Forms of cooperatives Proposed cummunity Cooperative (e.g. water supply): Community and privatly owned; Aim: commercial services (make profit) and provide infra-structure for volontary and private work and work for disabled and part time Traditional Cooperatives (e.g. wine processing): Jointly privatly owned; Aim: make profit and reinvest; keep control of work conditions Social Cooperatives: Aim: provide legal environment and infrastructure for non profit services not provided by state or not privately affordable
