1. Effect of Globalization Organized sector reduced, unorganized sectors increased. Manufacturing & construction workers employment decreased. Service sector employment increased. GDP increased as well as inflation increased. Trade Union weaken, bargaining capacity reduced. Eg. TATA – organised worker reduced from 58,000 to 20,000 & contractual worker increased from 17,000 to 40,000, Indian Railways – workforce reduced from 16.5 lakh to 13 lakh, most of the migrant workers left Malaysia. Union struggling hard and come under one umbrella – centrally agitated on 7 th September 2010. In Malaysia dialogue initiated regarding migrant workers.

2. Are there Minimum Standard guaranteed to all worker? Yes, specially for organized worker - The industrial Dispute Act, Factory Act, The Contract Labour Act, Trade Union Act, Employees Provident Fund Act, Payment of Wages Act, Minimum Wages Act, Workman Compensation Act.

3. Hurdles /Difficulties in organizing workers Specially in unorganized sector – illiteracy, geographically (scattered) workforce, Special Economy Zone (SEZ), Free Trade Zone (FTZ), political influences, employer obstructions in formation of union.

4. Short commings in the social security schemes Organized sector – lack of implementation of labour laws. Unorganized sector – lack of labour laws and lack of awareness in workers.

5. Main priorities of Trade Union To organize informal sector workforce through trade union education. Campaign for “Right to work” to include as fundamental right. Unification of Central Trade Union organization.
