2 “Cotton Is King” Economic Spiral: - South: bought more slaves, bought more land, bought more slaves. - North: shipping/selling of cotton, purchasing of mfg. goods Cotton: - ½ of all American exports. - South produced more than ½ worlds cotton - Britain relied on Southern cotton - textile jobs

3 The Planter Aristocracy Planter aristocrats: - most of the Southern wealth - widened gap between rich and poor - education issues - public - private - feudal society: big houses, big $, etc.

4 Slaves of the Slave System -Land butchery: westward expansion -Demand for land, monopolistic -Big got bigger, the small got smaller -Financial Instability -Debt based on speculation -Investment on land/slaves -One crop economy -Lack of population/immigration -Slave labor, cost of land, ignorance in cotton

5 The White Majority -Only 25% of all southerners owned slaves. -Small slave owners were the majority. -Different kind of slavery??? -Whites who owned no slaves, ¾ or all southern whites. -Not cotton farmers, very poor living -Sick, hookworm! -Defenders of the slave system?!?! Why? -Mountain Whites -Isolated -Hated the rich southern whites

6 Free Blacks: Salves Without Masters Upper south free blacks, Revolutionary days Lower south free blacks, emancipated children or purchased their freedom New Orleans, free blacks with property Prohibited from working in certain occupations Hated by supporters of the slave system Disliked in the North, hated by the Irish The North liked the race but not the individual the South liked the individual but hated the race.
