1 Today is Monday, December 9, 2013 Homework: - Chapter 10 Homework Packet Assigned (due Friday) - Study for Ch. 10 Test (on Friday) -Bring in TRASH for Wednesday’s sorting lab!!!!!!! -Warm UP: In table groups, discuss the following: “Since resources are limited, what are ways that people just like you and I can help conserve resources?”

4 Goal for Today SWBAT demonstrate the ability to extend and apply knowledge of ways people can reuse, recycle, and reduce the use of resources by identifying reducing, reusing, or recycling strategies and coming up with personal examples. Helping us reach our Standard…. 5-ESS3-1 Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.

6 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!!!!!!! Recycle: To treat or re-process something so that it can be used again Reuse: Using the same thing as many times as possible for the same or different purpose Reducing: Limiting the total amount of resource used

7 Recycling is not always done to save materials –Sometimes it’s done to conserve energy –For example: recycling metals, such as aluminum from aluminum cans, takes less energy than getting it from a mine

8 Recycling Plastic

9      Collect plastic Sort by number Chopped into flakes Flakes are washed Flakes are tumbled dry in the air Flakes are melted and formed into new things

10 Recycling Paper

11     Paper soaked in water and chemicals, turning it into soft, wet pulp Pulp pushed through screens to remove objects Detergents or other process to remove ink Clean pulp is pressed Clean pulp is dried to make new paper Recycling Paper
