1 Rostow’s modernisation theory Use theories of development to help explain why societies develop over time, including Rostow’s modernisation theory and dependency theory. Before looking at Rostow’s Modernisation Theory we need to understand what is meant by the different types of employment.

2 Employment Structure Economic development in a country sees a shift in the type of employment (jobs) that people do. There are 4 sectors of employment: Primary Secondary Tertiary Quaternary

4 Employment Structure DefinitionExample Primary Jobs that involve extracting raw materials from the land or sea. Secondary Jobs that involve manufacturing, where raw materials are converted into final product. Tertiary Jobs that provide a service. Quaternary Jobs that provide information, research and expert help.

Secondary Jobs that involve manufacturing, where raw materials are converted into final product. Car making plants and Steel processing. Tertiary Jobs that provide a service. Doctors, Teachers, Dentists and Travel Agents. Quaternary Jobs that provide information, research and expert help. IT, Engineers, Scientists and Forensics.

6 Rostow’s modernisation theory Here are the five stages of the model; High Mass Consumption Traditional Society Drive to Maturity Take off Pre-conditions for take off These stages are not in the right order. What you have to do is; 1.Work out which order they go in? 2.Try and come up with a description of what may be happening in each stage in terms of a country’s development. The theory looks at: How a country goes through different stages of development through time.

9 Criticisms of Rostow’s Theory? Can you think of any criticisms of the theory? Main ones: -Outdated (1960) and too simple. -Not all countries follow the same path of development. Some may skip sections. -Model assumes all countries start off the same and all have the same population, resources and climate. -Model doesn’t look at how the development of some countries (e.g. the UK) was at the expense of others during colonization. (The British Empire)
